Science coverage question

Post by rideswithchrist » Thu Jul 30, 2015 2:46 pm

I see that in Beyond- the science jups all over God's wonderful works... will the entire book be covered by the end of Beyond?
I see that it is unit based, which is ok with me but I almost wanted to go through the creation book front to back.

Does anything get skipped? The science seems minimal in the guide.

Science in the early years is purposefully light. At this age, the focus is on exploring the world around them, not on facts. Basically all science topics taught in K-5 are retaught in 6-12 in any of the typical curriculums out there. So HOD in LHFHG and Beyohnd ties the science into the history, giving it more meaning for the kids. Although it is light, kids remember more of it this way. When we first did LHFHG two years ago, I was tempted to add more formal science after a few units. But I am so glad I didn't! Instead we did occasionally do some extra things - shows on NetFlix, books from the library, trips to the zoo/aquarium/science museum. But, adding more school to the day would take away her time to explore and learn things naturally. Now she soaks things up in free reading books.

Is it really necessary to get the science book or could we do the activities without it?

I have made it work without it. I normally will try to find something to eat or watch to go with the activity. Some times it is science books we own, library books, YouTube videos, and shows on Netflix/Amazon Prime like Curious George, Sid the Science Kid, etc.
