Yet another written narration question (CTC)

Post by mrsrandolph » Tue May 19, 2015 8:25 pm

In the box for written narration in the CTC notebook pages, there isn't room to write a lot. So, I am assuming that 3-5 sentences are expected. Now my kids either type theirs on the computer (my son with dysgraphia) or write on notebook paper (my daughter). But if they answer all the questions within the guide about the narration, it is going to be longer than that. Even to cover the meat of the reading makes it longer, in my opinion. IS this ok, or is it supposed to be more succinct. Personally, I like that they are longer and all encompassing of the main ideas of the passages.

The written narrations in CTC are supposed to be 5-8 sentences. My dd writes hers small. It all fits in there just fine. There were a few that ran close. But in general, she has small handwriting and she just writes it all in.

I guess ours are closer to 8 sentences. But there is no way my kids could squeeze that in. LOL ;)

My ds writes very small, and he has had to write shorter narrations then he might have in CTC to squeeze it into the box. His narrations have been approximately 4 - 5 sentences, and he has used every possible space in the box. They would be 8 sentences if the box were bigger. We have wished for bigger boxes too! His writing for CTC is really small.

We've almost always been able to fit it all in. She writes it on notebook paper first, makes any corrections we need to make, and then copies it into the box. Only very rarely has it been too much (in either CTC or RTR) and then I just have her do it on notebook paper and put it in her binder at that spot. And she generally does more than the recommended amount. They just have to write small.

For your son that types his narrations you can just size the typed document to the size of the box and glue it in. We often needed to make it longer and then just fold it up. You can look at my blog from a few years ago to see how we did it. For copywork and things that I knew he couldn't write small enough to fit in the box I would pre-cut the paper and just make it the right width, but longer than the box and again we would just fold it up after gluing it in.

My DD cuts lined paper to fit the box. She writes straighter with the lines. Then if she needs more room she writes on the back leaving a inch or so at the top to glue it in place.
