Placement help for DD

Post by kwickimom » Thu Apr 30, 2015 3:42 pm

DD12 (will be 13 in August) did Preparing in 4th grade and did great with it- perfect placement. We then switched and did a mish mash of things for 5-7th and now for 8th through high school we are coming back to HOD (never should have left!!)

I would like to place DD in MTMM so that she can just follow the guides right up through high school. I am just wondering if I should do Rev to Rev instead due to a few minor issues.
Here are her skills-
Reading- She can read difficult books and completed Lightning Lit 7 so she has had formal literature. She is beginning to think deeply about what she has read, but I think could still use a little work in that area. We haven't really done any deep discussions so I'm not sure, but we could work on that this summer.

Writing- She has almost completed Writing With Skill and writes well. She previously completed a few levels of EIW. She mainly worked on writing summaries this year, so I am not sure how great she will be at narrations- we haven't done those in awhile. She has done most of the skills listed in the writing part. I would just need to brush up her narrations. We haven't done dictation since 4th grade.

grammar- she has completed up to level 5 in R&S so 6 is perfect

Overall, I think she can do MTMM. I did order the TM so I can look extensively, but would like some opinions on what others think. Can we jump into MTMM with being away from HOD so long? I really would like to avoid the beefing up of MTMM if I put her in Rev to Rev and then missing one high school guide, but obviously I'd rather have her placed right :D I REALLY wish I could have gotten to a conference where HOD was to look at everything, but there are none close enough.

Thanks in advance!!!
Erin

I think you should be fine. Maybe take it slow to start, and practice a bit of narration over the break.

She sounds like she would do fine with MTMM. Maybe look up some of the things on here about written narrations and the difference between that and summaries just so you can help her to figure that part out.

thank you for your opinions. I will practice narrations- she reads extensively over the summer so we can do that. I think I will have her read a few Rev to Rev books and do some discussions on them to prepare also.

LynnH, I tried to search for the differences between narrations and summaries, and I didn't come up with anything after searching for a long time. Do you have any posts in mind? Or can you tell the difference here? :)

Hi jjn3beans!

I am not LynnH, but I can answer most of your question
Narration is basically your child telling you what stood out to them in the story, while a summary is a basic telling of facts given about a story.
I have found being able to do both very beneficial.

Hope this helps some! I'm sure LynnH will also reply- she's good about helping others. I just wanted to give you something to get by on until she could respond.

Perfect! Thank you Mikki and Stephanie. My older girls are really good at summarizing and have had a lot of practice doing this. I've often told them, "Just the bones!" I think they will be thrilled when I tell them to give me some descriptions, especially DD10, who loves details.
