1st Grade but already reading... what to do?
Hello Everyone,
My name is Jamie. I am new here. I just finished buying everything I need for the Little Hearts for His Glory. I will have a first grader and Kindergartener next year. My First Grader is reading. What should I do with him. I see that the LHFHG does not have a set of readers. Should I just add my own? Any suggestions of something that would go with with the program? I had thought about using the readers from BLHFHG but I do don't to mess things up if I decide to use this program next year.. any suggestions?
THanks,
Jamie in Virginia

As Christy said, the emerging reader program might be perfect for your dear one. Athough Little Hearts does not include the schedule for the emerging reader set, it is available in the Beyond manual. You could buy the Beyond manual now for the emerging reader schedule. You wouldn't be losing that money if you are planning on moving into Beyond later anyway. Then when you get to Beyond, if you are finished with the emerging reader set, you simply order Drawn into the Heart of Reading level 2 and start there.
You won't mess anything up!
If your child is beyond that you could start Drawn Into the Heart of Reading, or you could take the year to the emerging reader set anyway as a way to strengthen your child's reading skills before moving into Drawn next year.
The emerging reader schedule includes reading comprehension questions for each book to get your child ready for the next level.
You can take a look at the books int he emerging reader set here:

I agree with using the Emerging Reader set. BLHFHG is made to use with those still doing phonics, emerging readers or DITHOR. You still simply have a box reminding you to do reading. The schedules are in the back of the manual.

Hi Jamie! I just wanted to wave out a welcome from Kansas, too!
You've been given some great advice here. While LHFHG assumes your child is still doing phonics, it won't mess anything up this year or next to use your reading time to do the Emerging Readers this year and move into Drawn Into The Heart of Reading next year. I'd encourage you to get the scedule and great questions for the Emerging Readers in the Beyond manual. I wish I'd found HOD in time to enjoy them with my oldest.
Have fun!
Kathleen

Jamie,
The ladies are giving you wonderful advice! It is a great "problem" to have a child reading so well already while getting set to do LHFHG!
You can easily use the schedule in the Appendix of "Beyond..." along with LHFHG without messing up your next year with "Beyond..". You may also find that you'll want to use the spelling list 1 and lesson plans for spelling in "Beyond..." too along with LHFHG (if your little sweetie is ready for that). If not, just hold off.
Blessings,
Carrie

Re: 1st Grade but already reading... what to do?
Hi Jamie,
It seems we have a similar "problem" and as Carrie says it's a great problem to have!
My dd5 is a good little reader, having completed the abeka 1st grade readers this spring.
I chose to buy LHFHG instead of Beyond because my dgd6 who is entering 1st grade isn't as good a reader and I also have a ds4 who isn't reading at all and I wanted very much to buy one program to use with all of them...well there were other considerations, too...but that's the main one.
SO, I would love to buy the Beyond manual and use the emergent reader schedule from that...but that isn't in the budget until next year. I wish that could be purchased seperately, or included with the LHFHG manual like the optional math/science schedules are for 1st and 2nd grades...it makes sense.
We can't be the only families with the same "problem" - can we?
I've considered using DITHOR with my dd5...but I can't see using a 2/3 book with a kindergartener. I'm thinking next year will be soon enough.
Perhaps Carrie would consider making the schedule and comprehension questions a downloadable item? (Can you hear me, Carrie?)
We are SO excited to be starting our first week with LHFHG this week...we actually did day 1 last week, and really enjoyed it...not that I was surprised! I'm just so glad to have a curriculum that is so easy to follow!
Let us know, Jamie, what you decided to do.
Blessings,
merchi

Re: 1st Grade but already reading... what to do?
merchi,
I do hear you on the downloadable shedule with Emerging Reader Set, but typically those who need the Emerging Reader Schedule also need the spelling lists and early grammar lessons and/or the higher level of math also included in the Beyond guide. So, it's usually not just the Emerging Reader Schedule that moms are needing for their little ones. That makes purchasing the Beyond guide to cover all of those areas a good deal. We also hesitate to start taking apart our guides and selling the pieces individually as that doesn't go with the philosophy in which our guides are written.
We have to draw the line somewhere as to what to indclude in any given guide. By providing 2 levels of language arts and math in each and every guide, we are much beyond what other publishers give you for the money. You can actually buy 2 of our guides for what one MFW guide costs or for what buying all of the guides needed to use Winter's Promise or Sonlight for all subjects for a year would cost.
Blessings,
Carrie
