Using M to M for 10th grade

Post by Taryn » Mon Aug 05, 2013 5:08 pm

Hi, I would love some help:) This will be our 4th year of using HOD:). My older dc started with C to C. my younger ones started with LHTH:) We have completed 7 of the HOD guides thus far!!! Loved them all:)
This year my rising 10th grader will be in M to M. I have read many of the post on high school. They were very helpful:) We will do chemistry, American History with ext., Economics,( using ideas from previous posts), 2nd half of Video Text Alg.,D-F, Italian for foreign language, Complete R&S 7, WWTB vol.2, and ????? literature. Last year we used DITHOR for 9th as a intro. to lit. DD will be in the World Geography guide for 11th and the World History for 12th. I know we need American, British, and World Lit. So, I know World Lit. Is scheduled for the world history guide. That leaves me with American Lit. and British Lit. for the 10 th and 11th grade years. It seems that we would do American Lit. this year as we complete American History. I need some book recommendations for American Lit. I looked at the Lit. Selection, girl set for next year in the World Geo. guide and would love to use that. But it's more of an intro. course right? So dear ladies, I have to start school in less than 2 weeks and I'm really having a hard time with this? I read the high school post on different options for literature for 9th using Rev. to Rev., but I'm still not sure which books could be used for Amer. History 10th. I am not opposed to using DITHOR again for 10th. continuing with higher level lit. Also, could any of the basic reading package books in M to M be used for lit. Such as, "Mama's Bank Account"? I know the basic package isn't required for credit when doing the ext. package. So if any or all of those titles could work, I would love that. I'm just throwing out any ideas that come to mind in my desperation! So , I will wait on your wonderful advice:) Thank you!

I do have one more question:) My rising 1st grader did LHFHG last year for K. She completed Singapore Math1A and 1 B for K. She did fine, but it was a little hard. I wish I would have waited until this year. Anyway, I have completed levels 1- 6 of Singapore with my older dc and know it is great, but challenging. I don't think my rising 1 st grader is ready for 2a and 2 b. What math would you do for her 1st grade year? Thanks so much!

Sorry, no help for your high school Lit question, but about 1st grade math-I found Math Mammoth to be a similar approach to Singapore. I think you could use their 1st grade math as a way to reinforce anything she may not have gotten from Singapore 1A-B; and you shouldn't have a problem transitioning back to Singapore 2.

We really like Math Mammoth. Although I do use her "old" version because she has since aligned with the Common Core Standards.

I might be tempted to just go ahead and get the Geography guide and use the literature from in there. Yes, it is an introduction to literature, but I think that is OK. You could also just pick 3-4 Progeny Press or SMARR guides that you thought went well with the time period or just do DITHOR again with your own American Literature picks. We read and enjoyed the Scarlett Letter, Uncle Tom's Cabin and Up From Slavery. My second oldest also read Mamma's Bank Account. My oldest boys read The Old Man in the Sea, The Pearl, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, White Fang, and Call of the WIld. There is language in many of these that I whited out. Remember, you could also just do a couple of guides and then just read and discuss some other works.

Thank you so much for your response:). I am really trying to get this right. :| I know that since we are in high school each decision I make will impact all of her high school choices.... I really want to choose wisely. DD wants to go to college so I am mindful of that too.

If I stuck with DITHOR for my dd's 10th grade year, picking American Lit. books, would I do the World Geography next year as it is written for 11th? Maybe adding more British Lit. Would it work to sub out some titles in the girl pack next year to get more British Lit? Also, I would love to have a few more "girl friendly" choices for Amer. Lit. If anyone has any suggestions that I could use with DITHOR or whatever I end up using. That would be great.

I thought I was going to use Notgrass to beef up my economics. But after reading on the board, I saw that Carrie said it may be difficult for a freshman. My dd is on the young end for a rising sophomore, so now I'm wondering which of Carrie's economic choices would be not so difficult to add on. I don't want to overwhelm her next year. She will already be challenged with beefing up M to M.

Carrie and Julie, I know you both are so busy, but I so appreciate your insight. I would love your advice too,if possible. I am thinking to myself that planning high school should not be this overwhelming:( I just can't seem to get this year figured out knowing that each year builds on the next.I know I have to plan ahead.

Thank you all for any help, prayers and direction.
Blessings,
Taryn

__________
Yes, my two that are graduated were boys!

I thought I was going to use Notgrass to beef up my economics. But after reading on the board, I saw that Carrie said it may be difficult for a freshman.
_____________
I used Notgrass economics and couldn't face it again. It is certainly not a bad curriculum. I just found it dry. It is not a subject I find particularly interesting anyway, so we need a little "entertainment" (for lack of a better word). I am trying Economics in a Box this time.

I will give some more thought to this and hope Carrie or Julie chime in.

I was looking up the titles in the girls' choices from the geography guide. Stepping Heavenward (Bible or personal devotions), A Lantern in Her Hand, Little Women, and Papa's Wife are all American authors and fit close to the MTMM time frame. There are also lots of American authors in the Fundamentals of Literature book. I don't know if I would want to switch out Pride and Prejudice, but the Ragged Dick book boy choice is an American author. I think using the literature from the geography guide might be a really good fit.

I also agree that Math Mammoth 1 might be a good filler year for your younger one before transitioning back to Singapore. They are similar teaching styles.

My now-11th grade son used RC Sproul Jr's video curriculum last year (Economics for Everybody) and found it very engaging. He looked forward to it every week. It isn't enough by itself, but it does a great job of getting a student interested, and launching or augmenting further study.

I would post a link but I'm not sure if it is okay to do that on this board?

Jenn-
If Economics for Everybody wasn't enough, what else did you use? Is it enough if you use it with what is already scheduled in MtMM?
Thanks

When you purchase the curriculum, it comes with a small book containing outlines of the main points of each video lesson, and follow-up questions. For the most part, these were very good questions that required the student to reflect on what was presented, and engage in some further thought and discussion. The curriculum also has a list of suggested books to read along with the videos, in order to deepen what the student learns and to bring the curriculum to a half credit.

This year will be my first with MTMM, so I'm not qualified to comment on whether this video series would be enough in addition to the econ books in that package. But I do think I remember on another thread that Carrie mentioned Econ. for Everybody as an optional addition to beef up MTMM for high school. That particular thread may have been advice for a student who was not college-bound though, I can't remember... I'll see if I can find it.
