Text Connection: necessary literature???

Post by tiffany_0726 » Thu Jul 18, 2013 8:13 am

So, it seems to me, that the instructions are already given, and that the Text Connection is only there as a referral? I'm starting LHFHG with my 5yog and really don't have a huge budget to buy all the books it says to. As much as I would like to have those books on hand, I just don't see the point in having them if it's already wrote out for me. I find it as a waste of money if the book is just going to sit on the shelf un-used. We're looking at purchasing these in the next couple weeks so feed back a.s.a.p. would be appreciated! Thanks.

Are you talking about the Science? I believe it's only one book, and it's not necessary if you'd like to find ways to save.

Looks like the other two are the Bible study and math. I know the Bible study is optional. Math you could possibly do without the workbooks, but you would have to do some sort of reinforcement there for sure. It could be pages you print out from the web, worksheets you make, etc. So, if you had money for only one of those three, I would get the math and not the other two.

Yeah, in Science, Math, and Bible Study. Thankfully I was looking through hand-me-down books, and found a Kindergarten Math workbook, so that saved me $10. I'm in love with the Family-Time Bible, so I'm for sure going to get that. Even though I got LHFHG handed down to me and saved $60, it's still going to cost me about $180 to get all the other books and material. I've checked the library and they don't have any of them! Is it customary for a homeschool family to spend around $200 for curriculum in books each year?!

I really like the devotional book as well.

Well, you don't HAVE to spend that much, but that's not unreasonable at all to spend. I spend way more than that. :) Remember, most of what you are buying with HOD is non-consumable and you will use again. They are all books that you will want to keep on your shelves forever, for more children or grandchildren. :)
Most curriculums cost WAY more and are consumable workbooks. I love HOD. :)

You can spend less, but it often means more work. Most of the complete curriculums out there are $200 for the early years. And many of those like Gwenny said use a lot more consumables that HOD. But, you can often find parts for HOD at used curriculum sales, etc I bet. The alter guides in HOD get more expensive (because there are more books), so I am going to be looking more at our local used curriculum sales as the kids get older, to keep the costs down a little more.

I see that you have a lot of what you already need like the TM. I am not sure how much things cost individually. I just thought I would let you know that I just purchased the Kindergarten Basic package, The Kindergarten Economy package, and the Family Time Bible and it was only $154 with shipping. I know that you already have some of those books but that gives you the Math, Science, Bible, the story time set, plus the TM and the "Hide Em' in Your Heart" CD (which I know is not integral to system. it just came with the package) This is another option for you but you would have double. I didn't realize things were so much more expensive if you didn't buy the package and bought individually. I hope you find what you need =)
