K or 1A for math?

My youngest daughter will be 6 in Dec. This is her 1st grade year. We really didn't do much for her K year unfortunately. I'm holding off on doing LHFHG until her younger brother is old enough for it as she really wants to do it with him. I want to keep her up to grade on her LA and math though.

Should I have her do the K math first or can she jump right into 1A? I already own Beyond. Will I need to buy the LHFHG to do the math if we go with K?

I would suggest to do K first unless she has a really really strong math background. In Singapore they start 1A when the child turns 7 (from my understanding) and it is advanced anyway. SO you'd not only be doing an advanced for first grade program, but your child will be more than a year away from the age typically started with 1A.

With that said, if your child has a very strong math background, then you could start with 1A. Even so I would likely suggest to purchase the K level books and let her go through them at her own pace. They do provide a thorough math foundation.

You could always go to the singapore website and have her take the placement test.... don't help her at all, just let her answer to the best of her ability.

Can the K books stand alone or should I get LHFHG for the activities?

Personally I think they can stand alone, but I know a lot of people love the hands on stuff. It's just not really that hard to figure out something to do hands on wise for the K-level for me. You can use Beyond to get an idea of the types of hands on stuff and modify from there. But I'm a weird mathy person who has kids who love math, so we are doing hands on stuff from the time they can hold things.

Personally for a 6 year old as long as she had basic math skills down I would jump right into 1a.

My oldest started 1B at right at 6, but she had done RightStart A before and so 1B even was a review. Since your dd isn't going to be 6 until December then I really think you should probably do the earlybird books first. Maybe you could just start with earlybird 2B? That way you'd be starting 1A at a little bit older and she'd already have that math foundation. You could just go through it at her pace; you wouldn't have to do everything even.
