Confused about Preparing, what books to order

I won't bore you all with my long story with my search for the perfect curriculum to help my spoiled only ds, LOL! With that said...
I have looked at the placement chart and ds fits better with Preparing than any other guides. He's 10 (April b'day) and is functioning more or less at about 4th grade level for this year. We are coming from primarily textbooks and will continue with some of those that are working. However, we are still drawn to HOD for history and science in particular. We might even branch out to other areas in the future. I would love for this kid to love school!
However, not sure if it's gonna happen, ever.
We have bounced around with programs, so not much history/science has happened in the past.
What do you suggest us adding to the basic preparing package?? I know science, but what about the others? Would he need the extension books or etc.? Ds is somewhat immature for his age, but I don't want it "too" easy for him.
I appreciate any and all help.
Thanks!
