Carrie or Julie-History extension for 7th grade

I know that you have recommended The 5000 Year Leap and The Federalist Papers for 9th grade in Rev to Rev. My DS is starting 7th grade next month in Rev to Rev. He is a bright 12 year old, however, I didn't know if that extra reading would be too much for him. What would be your suggestions?
