Using BH and Bey.: Do I combine poetry & story?

Post by abrightmom » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:33 am

Ladies,

If we are using Bigger and Beyond at the same time (long story) is it advisable to combine poetry and storytime? If so, which poetry box should I follow and which storytime box? Each storytime box has different activities and I'm not sure how to decide what would be more appropriate. Does the story time box work with any book in the scheduled genre? My thoughts about poetry are that poetry really takes so little time that it may not matter....and it seems tied to the units (at least in Bigger; I haven't perused Beyond's).

Thank-you. :D

We have used both Beyond and Bigger, but not simultaneously. I am not sure about the poetry. The poetry in Bigger is definitely more advanced than in Beyond....more difficult vocabulary, topics of study (meters, onomatopoeia, rhyming patterns, etc), as well as the themes themselves. I think I may do poetry separately.

Storytime, on the other hand, could easily be combined with Bigger and Beyond. Both of those guides go by genre (like Dithor). Once you get to Preparing though, the storytime is more history era related, so at that point you may want to do both. But certainly combining storytime in Bigger and Beyond would be easy to do.

I personally would combine storytime, but not poetry. The poems go along with the history readings, and the poetry lessons only take a couple of minutes each day (plus copywork which they do on their own anyway).

I agree! I would combine the kiddos' together for Beyond's storytime. Then, I would do the poetry separately from Beyond and Bigger. :D
