hs Newbie science and bible question

Post by TNT » Sun Jul 24, 2011 1:59 pm

I have 3 that will be doing HOD this year and our books are on the way!

I know there is different curriculum for science for Bigger and LHFHG - but does it work best to just do my older child's science with all my kids at the same time? Is that what families do?

What about for bible- is that something all the kids can do together?

Thanks!

These are things that I struggled with when we first started HOD because in my mind it seemed "better" to keep those things together. But what I have found in reality is those subjects really sink in better when they are at their own level. The science you really want to keep separate because your LHFHG kids will be doing Bigger science and you want it to be fresh. But Bible I do try to connect that as a family. I still feel the actual Bible lessons that are in HOD are designed to hit at their developmental level and it really does hot their heart as written better. So we keep that actual part separate. But for together time we have done a few things. Start our school time out in prayer with a short devotional or reading of the Bible. Really a prayer time where everyone gets to pray is enough to have that together feeling. The reading of the Bible we have done are either to read what comes before and after the verses that are used in HOD in one of the kids programs and just alternate which one we do and discuss that. Then we do the HOD part at their level. Or another great thing is to just pick a book of the bible to read together and discuss or read through the Bible chronologically.

That is what I have done. I am huge on Bible study and reading with my kids. It may be more than some people would want but we have found linking something with Bible together is what gives us the feeling of being together even though we are in separate programs. The other thing we do is connect story time. You can pick one program's story time or parts of each and story time can be done as a family fairly easily. I think if you want to not add a thing to HOD and have part of it together story time is really the one to do all together. You can read higher level books to younger children and be well above their reading level and they do just fine.

Anyway hope something there helps. :D You're going to love LHFHG and Bigger. That was our first year with HOD and it was wonderful!
