Science for 8th grade using RTR

Post by blessed2five » Thu Jul 21, 2011 7:09 am

I was wondering what other people have used for science with their 8th grade dc? I have looked at the science that is scheduled with RTR and wondered if it would be enough for 8th grade? My dd just finished Apologia General Science and did not care for it at all, probably because I had her perform the labs and take the tests. That is about the only formal science she has had other than unit studies and using a history of science program. I am also considering using the science in RevTR. I am open to any insight or suggestions at this point. Thank you

Emily,

I have two options that I'm pondering that you could consider. One would be to do RTR's science as written 4 days a week, using Option 1. Then, on the 5th day each week, you could have your child do Our Weather and Water (which is option 2), doing one lesson each 5th day all year long. In essence, your child would be doing both options that way, which would definitely raise the level but still allow you to use the guide as written. :D

The other option would be to do Rev2Rev's science. This would work too. So, either way is fine. :D

In making the decision, I would encourage you to look ahead a bit and see what science sequence you'd like your child to pursue in high school. If you'd like to do Physical Science as a freshman, Biology as a sophomore, Chem. as a junior, and Physics or another advanced science as a senior, then I'd lean toward doing RTR's science as written, with Weather and Water on Day 5. This would leave the physical science in Rev2Rev "as is" for your child's freshman year with Rev2Rev. :D

If you'd rather do Bio. as a freshman, Chem. as a sophomore, Physics as a junior, and another advanced science as a senior, then I'd instead do Rev2Rev's science in grade 8, as you won't get to it otherwise. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

Thank you for your personal and thorough reply to my science questions. At this point I like the option of her staying with the scheduled science in RTR and adding to it with Our Weather and Water. With this option she can continue on with Physical science next year while using the RevtRev guide. Hopefully, with the following guide you will have a Biology option for the students using HOD for HS :D

Thank you again!

I will be using RTR with my 5th & 7th grade boys. Should I consider adding both sciences for my 7th grader or was this just suggested for 8th since the following year that student would be in High School? We plan to do Rev to Rev next year for 6th & 8th.
Thanks!

My dd 7th grade is going to be using RtR science as written. I think for an 8th grader it would need beefing up a tad in order to prepare for the jump into high-school level science. But I am good with my (very science oriented) 7th grader to stick with RtR science as written this year. Next year, with RevtoRev, we will choose the option 2 which makes it more advanced for 8th graders, but is still scheduled into the guide as an option (if I understand it correctly---hopefully someone can confirm this?).

Thanks Angie,

I was feeling that way but second guessing after reading this post :D . I am happy with HOD as written for my guys for next year, too!

So sorry to be confusing ladies! I only suggested this alternative option since Emily has an 8th grader. The science in RTR is fine as written for a 7th grader. I was just looking ahead to make sure the poster's son was prepared for high school science the following year. :D

Also, in answer to Emily's question, your son could do Rev2Rev with the science as written for high school the following year, simply by choosing the advanced kit option. This makes the science credit-worthy for a high school student in the area of physical science with lab. :D

Carrie

Thank you for the reply Carrie. I have an 8th grader and was planning on having her finish Apologia General Science this year, but your idea looks more appealing.
