Hi, i am looking at scheduling for the fall. I am wondering what the l.a. box is like. How exactly is spelling done? Does the child work independently on this? I will have the index card w the words on it and they will study the card on their own, correct? Also, since i am just adding this box to lhfhg, how does that work next year when we do beyond fully? Will I begin cursive and english at that point?
Thank you!!

Re: language arts box in beyond
The language arts box spends the first 4 days on the spelling words. The first day you have the child look at each card, flip it over and write it, then flip it back and have them correct it. The second day you say the word, use it in a sentence, and have the child write it without looking. Then guide them to flip the card over and correct if necessary. The third day you choose 3 or more cards the child has had trouble with, have the child make a sentence with that word, write the sentence down with the word underlined, and have them copy the sentences. Finally the 4th day you say the words (and use them in a sentence) and have the child write them without looking at the card. They should again correct any words they got wrong. It really is not an independent activity. As far as the English and cursive, I guess that will depend on where your child is at and if he/she is ready. English and cursive begin in the Bigger guide. You could do them with Beyond or you could just do spelling list 2 the year you do Beyond.

Oh good! I thought there were two spelling lists.
That mght b better, depending on where wevare at then. Thank you so much for your discription! That really helps me plan.
So, there is one day that you have some grammar instruction, right? So, that on that day maybe I could get a jump start on english 2? I guess it is a lil bit away, I am just trying to figure it out a lil better. Had anyone out there done something similar? We will be using the beyond manual for math as well. I know some people use the full right side with LHFHG, and I am hoping to make this as easy as possible... My daughter is ready for beyond, but would be bummed to miss out on ready fox.
Any thoughts?
Thank u again for your help!!

Mercy,
The ladies are doing a great job of helping you!
You can easily add any of the 3R's from Beyond to LHFHG as desired. So, for example if your daughter needs the spelling, you would follow spelling list 1 in the Beyond guide and use Beyond's plans for spelling 4 days each week. Then, you would weigh whether your daughter is also ready for a gentle intro. to grammar too. If she is, then you would also use Beyond's gentle grammar plans on the 5th day each week.
If you did use Beyond's spelling list 1 and the gentle grammar lessons, then the following year when you did all of the rest of Beyond, you would use Beyond's spelling list 2 and add Rod and Staff English 2 (doing just one lesson daily). At that point, you could weigh whether you also wanted to add the cursive from Bigger Hearts or not.
If, on the other hand, you did not use the gentle grammar lessons from Beyond along with LHFHG, then the following year you would teach Beyond's spelling list 2 and just follow Beyond's gentle intro. to grammar plans on the fifth day as written each week in Beyond. This would leave the English 2 in Bigger as scheduled.
Hopefully, I haven't confused you more. I know it sounds complicated, but the doing of it really isn't!

Carrie

Carrie,
Thank you for your help.
It is so nice to know we can taylor the curriculum to the child.
I was a lil uncertain about whether I should put the Burgess books to the side and just do the full right side of Beyond. I felt like I should keep going w the Burgess books, but didnt want to complicate our Beyond year, if that makes sense. I am going to go w my gut and others suggestions, and continue w the LHFHG storytime books. I am sure it will work out just fine working all over the place for a few years. I know by preparing everything catches up to one guide, so Im sure it will all work out.
I really am thankful that I can challenge her w the spelling, math and maybe grammar. I dont think she is ready for that storytime box to be moved to Beyond yet though.
