Math

Post by Livingtoglorify » Sat Jun 25, 2011 7:11 am

Has anyone supplemented with something besides the Earlybird workbooks? I found them at convention this week but I am thinking my hands-on learner may not do well with JUST work sheets for math. Has anyone else used a more hands-on approach? Did you do it with the earlybird or instead of?? Tell me about your experience. Has anyone done Right Start Math?

There are MANY hands-on activities in the TM that line up with the worksheets! I have a VERY hands-on learner as well and math is his FAVORITE subject after having gone through LHFHG with the activities that Carrie has planned out!

TM?? ... Teacher's Manual? Do you mean the LHFHG guide book or something else? Sorry... I am still trying to get use to all the terms and initials. I haven't actually gotten my guide yet so I haven't seen the activities. I just looked at the workbooks I could find at our convention this week to get an idea of what each was. :)

Yes, TM is the Teaching Manual, the LHFHG guide. Sorry. There is a box in there for math and it has a hands-on activity nearly every day to coordinate with the workbooks.

Yes the LHFHG TM/Guide has hands on activities that go with the math books. I'm sure the earlybird books that you saw were the newer editions, as only HOD sells the old ones new any more. My dd could not get enough of math so I ordered her the SM Essentials K books also, but that isn't necessary.

We are really enjoying Singapore with the hands-on activities in the Heart of Dakota (HOD) guides! :D The activities Carrie has written are the hands-on part. She has written hands-on activities to go with Early Bird 2A and 2B in Little Hearts for His Glory (LHFHG), Singapore 1A and 1B in Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory (Beyond or BLHFHG) and Singapore 2A and 2B in Bigger Hearts for His Glory (Bigger or BHFHG). By the student's 4th year of math, you transition to using the pictorial examples that are provided in the Singapore textbooks that are required starting with 3A and 3B. We found this to be perfect, as the students have a solid foundation of the hands-on "why" of math and can transition and not become overly dependent on the hands-on at that point, and have the ability to think abstractly.

I would check that you have the correct US edition of the math workbooks. I think, like twoxcel said, that HOD is the only one selling the older versions (not the standards edition). Singapore has continued to print these for HOD to use and sell, but I don't think anywhere else has any. :? They are quite inexpensive, so if you have the wrong edition at least it will be an inexpensive fix. :D
