Hello!

This will be our first year using HOD! My girls are 6 and 4. This is our 3rd year homeschooling and have used resources from CLP and MFW the past 2 years. We have our own Language Arts and Math we enjoy so will not be using those parts of the guide. We are excited to begin our journey with HOD. We will be using Little Hearts for His Glory.

My question is I feel that the K science book is a little weak for my 6 year old. She will be 7 on September 30th. My 4 year old has a Dec birthday. We already had the K science book and have used it some this past school year. I went ahead and purchased the 1st Grade Science book but think some aspects of it will be to advanced for my younger. Should I use both books? Maybe pull a little bit of what is in the guide from each book? Or should I just forget it and use one book or the other. I have looked over the guide and think I may be able to pull off both....I am just a lil nervous because we will be having a baby in July and I know he will be taking a lot of my time! So, I was wondering if anyone else had used both texts and could tell me rather or not it is doable?

As I understand it, most of the actual science your child will be doing will be from the Little Hearts Guide in the form of hands-on exploration, and the text is a supplemental connection. From the intro to Little Hearts:
"Science Discovery
Two days in each unit include simple, discovery activities that are linked to the history
readings. Hands-on exploration in the areas of life science, physical science, and earth
science help children make connections to the world around them. The World God Made
by Christian Liberty Press is referenced as a science text connection for the lessons.
Supplemental text connections for Our Father’s World and God’s Wonderful Works by
Christian Liberty Press are also noted in the Appendix for grades 1 and 2."
You could probably get along with the Grade 1 book, as you will be reading aloud to your children from it.
If they both place well in Little Hearts, that would work well.
Another option entirely would be to do Beyond Little Hearts with your almost 7 year old and Little Hands to Heaven (only 30 minutes a day) with the 4 year old. Even if you are using a different language arts and math, proper placement will be the key to a happy and successful year

I used both the K and 1st grade books for my Ker this year and using the 1st grade book hardly added any extra time at all. I think it is very doable to use both. The 1st grade pages are listed in the Appendix. There are no separate experiments/instructions for 1st grade. You just do what is in the guide and then read the extra pages out of the 1st grade book.

Blessedmom, I really did not want to have to use to guides. If I start out with 2, I will eventually end up with 3. My younger has tagged along the past 2 years with sissy and wants to do what sissy does, and honestly has caught on and remembered a lot more than her sister sometimes. Placement wise looking @ the science and history they do both place in LHFHG. We did very little history last year other than Bible with MFW. Science we did a lil more which is why I was considering both books to kind of "beef it up" for the older. It is looking @ math and LA that the older would place in Beyond...but as I said we have our own anyway. Thanks!

Both science books will not be hard to use! There are also neat extra optional history books listed in the Appendix, just so you know they're there. With you having a new baby soon, I just wanted to say that you could do LHFHG 4 days a week, as that will stretch it out about 9 weeks, and give your turning 5 yo time to grow into all of the skills she needs to have from LHFHG to be able to move on to Beyond Little Hearts successfully. LHFHG takes only about 1 1/2 hours a day to do, so it will be easy to get done each day. We loved our years in LHFHG (having been through it twice with my different sons) and cannot wait to go through it a third time with my littlest guy coming up to it soon! Have fun with it!
