Maybe the best compliment ever.

Post by raceNzanesmom » Thu Jun 02, 2011 10:56 pm

My mom has always been supportive of our decision to homeschool. However, she doesn't "really" agree with it. She has a very public school, old school, classroom mind set. She honestly believes that's the only way to get the best education. We didn't use HOD for our teen, but the teaching was similar. She lived with us for the first 3 years of our hs'ing (started in 7th grade). My mom always thought school was too light, saying things like he's just reading books, he needs more textbooks, why doesn't he take more tests, how can he be done so quickly, etc.

Fast forward to yesterday. She is here (IA) from TN for my oldest son's graduation on Sunday. She was looking at the books on my youngest son's shelf and asked me about them. I explained they were his Beyond Little Hearts books we'll be using in the fall, then showed her the guide and kind of explained how it worked. Unknowing to me, last night before bed she pulled the guide off the shelf and read through it, then read The Sword in the Tree. This morning she went on and on about how fantastic it all is. That the guide is perfect for helping a parent out, but looks so flexible for each child and family. Then she couldn't quit talking about how it teaches kids the Word and that's the most important thing in life. That it isn't about tests and sitting in a classroom for 7 hours a day. And again how perfectly fantastic it all is. Lastly, she told me she read The Sword and the Tree and how this is what kids should be reading, not all the garbage out there today, and on and on. I think she used every positive adjective known to man. It was seriously the best homeschooling compliment EVER! :D :D :D

Thanks, Carrie!

Wow! Now that IS awesome! I praise the Lord with you! He has definitely done a work in her heart, and has used HOD to help that process along. I pray the same for my dear mother! :D :D

I also agree that is wonderful! My mother also frowns on homeschooling and when she visits she never asks the kids a thing about school. Maybe next visit I should leave my Preparing guide out in the family room and pray she picks it up!! Praise God for how He is using HOD for His glory! :D Thank you for sharing.

WOW!!! That is really huge. Even if you share different ideas with your parents ... you can't help but want them to be proud of what you are doing, right? I am so impressed that she took the time to really look through that guide and even read one of the books. Hats off to your mom for taking the time to do that!

Praise the Lord! :D I'm so glad that your mom felt this way and shared it with you - that is truly a blessing from the Lord. :D Sometimes in homeschooling we have to be strong enough to stand alone. We have to know what we are doing is good and right, and that we are standing upon the "Rock". It sounds like you've done this solo before - how special that now your mom has come around to it! But if she hadn't, how amazing you were able to stand strong and stick with what you knew was right anyway. May the Lord strengthen us as moms and dads to stand firm upon Him when we are feeling alone, and may He do a great work in the hearts of those opposing us, that they may have a change of heart and experience the joy of homeschooling with Christ at the center too! Thanks for sharing this, and I am celebrating with you today! :D :D :D

Everytime I read posts like this I look for the "LIKE" buttons and there are none! LOL! So, had to say I love this post! I also have a mom that says she's supportive, but doesn't really "get" it, and will sometimes say that I should just put my dear children in school (if we've had a bad day, or whatever). It's so awesome to have other homeschooling moms and dear friends that can come alongside and encourage and truly understand! And, even better when someone who didn't "get" it, finally come around to being the support you so desire! So happy for you!

That is wonderful! My mom will be here the first week in July for 3 weeks. She will be arriving for our very first week of homeschool. [insert nervous laugh here]-she is a public school 4th grade teacher. I know she will be all in my TG and whatever we do during the 3 weeks she is here. Im hoping it goes well!

Angie,

What a wonderful work the Lord is doing in your mom's heart. I am certain that years of your faithful example in answering His call on your life to homeschool have come to fruition. I am so glad that your mom cared so much that she took the time to read through what your sweet child will be studying this year. :D I'm praising the Lord with you that HOD was there for you in this terrific moment. :D

Blessings,
Carrie
