Reposting on the main board:
Hello, I am going to be ordering soon for my soon-to-be 1st grade daughter. This will be our first year hs. I am not sure about the the phonics ordering. Is that geared more towards 1st graders? She is on a first grade level now in K. Is the emerging readers set more for 2nd graders? Also, the phonics program doesnt have a price listed and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much it was? Also, is the Deluxe pkg highly recommended? It sounds so neat, but I also have a 4th grade ds that I have to order for, and I have added everything up, and his is going to be considerably more than the cost of my dd's. Thank you!

Welcome! Here is a link to the page that shows the prices:
http://www.heartofdakota.com/byd-little ... ckages.php. The Reading Lesson is almost $30 and Reading Made Easy is almost $50. My oldest just finished 1st grade and the ERs. My second is going to start 1st grade and will read the ERs. (He finished The Reading Lesson back in February, I think.)
Hopefully someone can chime in on how to decide which to do. Maybe you can take a look at the Bibles (Church library? friend? bookstore?) to see if you think she needs a little more time with phonics, or if you think she'd be ready to tackle them. I will say, I'm glad I let my second son mature a few months (gain confidence, comfort, etc.) before we start the ERs. HTH.

Hello Mom24boys! Thank you for your help! I just had my daughter read one of the books in the Emerging Reader set, since we had it, the Amelia Bedelia book, and she did pretty well. I may go ahead and order the EM set versus the phonics. She really loves to read and I think she will do ok. Do you think your oldest struggle at all with it? Thank you again.

My oldest didn't struggle with it at all and I know my rising 1st grader will be just fine as well. I guess the biggest concern would be to frustrate her. If she did well, then I'd go for the ERs. Start at the beginning with the Bible so that she can also work on the comprehension questions. That is really what my boys have been developing this last year. I'm sure she will do great. If she starts to have a problem, I would slow down by getting a few extra books to plug in. A couple extra Amelia Bedelia's or Frog and Toads can spread things out a little. Toward the end of the ERs things kind of seem to get a little challenging (which is good).
I have also heard that if she isn't getting the questions "right" then go back and have her read the paragraph with the answer in the text and see if she can get it then. If not, then prompt or whatever. I didn't notice, are you going to do Beyond or LHFHG?
Glad to be of help and fun to know someone will be doing those ERs "with" us next year!

Hope you have a great year!
