I was directed by a kind lady to ask my questions on the main board so here goes...

I have a few questions before ordering PHFHG for my 4th grader for next fall. The direction guide says that its our choice whether to order the Basic as well as Deluxe Pkgs. I am having a hard time deciding if I should just order the Basic or the Deluxe as well? Is it recommended to do both or would it be ok to order the Basic, or neither? Also for the Drawn Into the Heart of Reading, does level 2/3 mean 2nd and 3rd grade level, 4/5 mean 4th and 5th grade level? I am new to HOD, so dont really have a clue as to what some things mean! Thank you in advance!

The basic package is what is used for the Storytime box in the plans. The deluxe package is used for the Independent History box in the plans. They are both optional if you have to economize, but they are both scheduled in the plans daily and beneficial. We will be doing both here.

I don't know that level 2/3 in DITHR is necessarily 2nd/3rd grade, but more the entry level. It is often used for 2nd or 3rd grade even 4th grade. Here is what it says in the introduction of the TM:
The daily plans are divided into the three following levels of instruction:
level 2/3, level 4/5, and level 6/7/8. The numbers correspond to
approximate graded instructional levels. The program intends for students
to remain in the same level of instruction for two years, before moving up to
the next level. However, the design of the program, allows you to shorten or
extend the number of years students remain in the same level to suit your
specific needs.
Level 2/3 has less writing in the student book and the student meets with you more often to read aloud to you. Each level up requires more writing, deeper analysis, and more independence. For a 4th grader, you could probably go either way as far as level. If your dc doesn't mind writing and is a pretty good reader then you could probably begin at level 4/5. If your dc doesn't like to write or hasn't done much in the way of reading instruction, you might want to begin at level 2/3. Hope that helps! :D
