"Reading Instruction"

In the recommendations given at the end of Jayden's testing they said that her reading instruction would be best in the mid 3rd grade to mid 4th grade range. We have half of DITHOR 2/3 left with the level two readers. With their instruction level in mind would you suggest going through 2/3 again with level 3 readers or moving on to 4/5?

If she is having a bit of trouble with answering the questions would you suggest more reading higher level books and doing level 2/3 book again? Or reading level 3 books and doing level 4/5 workbook? I guess I'm basically asking what part of DITHOR would be mid 3rd grade to mid 4th grade? I'm not going to move her ahead yet, I'd finish out the level 2 books with the 2/3 workbook. That should get us probably until mid fall.

They also said the same range for math, but since singapore is advanced and she'll be at least through with 3A before next testing if not through with 3B I feel we are right on track with math.

I think you'd right on with finishing the level 2 pack and moving into the level 3 pack. Level 2 pack has a reading level of 3.0-4.1. Level 3 pack has a reading level of 3.5-5.1. And, I'd personally stay with the level 2/3 student book, too - especially if she's having a bit of trouble answering the questions. We found that the 2/3 level student book and plans provided plenty of opportunity for relating to the book, THINKING about the book, literary analysis, character quality building, and learning to read with discernment. I used the 2/3 level book with my 4th grader while having him read the level 4/5 books. It was a perfect fit for us that year. He's not as fond of writing, and the biggest different between the 2 student books is that the student does quite a few more days of writing in the student book rather than discussing orally with you. They're expected to fill more of those pages out independently and come show them to you when finished. My son wasn't thrilled with writing. So, this made it fit us well to wait a year. He really took off with writing in 4th grade though, so it wasn't a chore when we moved on this year. But I don't think the 4/5 plans are requiring any more thought than the 2/3...just more writing (which is appropriate).

I agree with Kathleen! :D We also used level 3 and some 4/5 books this year (for 3rd grade) with the level 2/3 workbook and it was just fine. I actually still have some genres to cover with him in the 2/3 book(with level 4/5 books) and I think we will go ahead and finish it this coming year for the beginning of 4th grade so I can ease him into the level 4/5 workbook in January when he starts CTC. He did MUCH better with the 2/3 workbook in 3rd grade than he did the year before in 2nd. HTH a little!!! :D
