A little frustrated-help please

Ok, I have finally decided I think just to stick with LHFHG to do with my 6.5 and 5 yo. I was pretty comfortable about that and not purchasing beyond yet for LA and just waiting etc. My 6.5 will be doing 1st grade math (we use horizons) So it hit me while trying to sleep last night that by doing that I will not be getting the grade 1 math hands on activities will I? I am kind of confused why LHFHG has math targeted for K and 1st but only math activities for K level, I like the math activities listed in beyond, but that would mean another $40 for the book. I guess my questions are is there any other option I am not aware of and if not is it worth the money all at once this year for just the math activities??? Once again I appreciate all your advice and opinions. Thanks

If you are moving into Beyond the following year, your money isn't "wasted" its just paid a bit earlier. :
I use Beyond with my 7yo and the math from Bigger. Next year we will use Bigger with 3A/3B. You only experience the issue with buying the next manual for the activities once or twice. After 2A/2B, there are no more math activities scheduled.
Does that make sense?

I think if you are going to stick with Horizons you won't need the Math activities. We have used Horizons 2 this year, and it takes a lot of time (for us) and we're not even doing all of them. The Math activities are fun, and good, but I don't think I would purchase an extra manual for them, especially if you are using Horizons. However, like another poster mentioned, you wouldn't be wasting the money if you plan on doing Beyond...next year anyway. I think you may just need to decide if you really want to add those activities to your current Math program, or will dc be fine without them?

If you plan to stick with Horizons, then you do not need the math acitivites. They go with Singapore and are to be used in place of buying the textbook or teacher book for Singapore.
There are many of us using a different math and there are many of us using Little Hearts for 1st grade so you're not way off in left field with that.
I think it just becomes a matter of how much can possibly fit in the Little Hearts book....it would turn into a monster if all the math possibilities were given. But it would be nice if the math schedules were something that could be purchased individually for each year. Hmmmm....something else for Carrie to chew on!!
But again, you only need them if you are using Singapore.

The ladies are correct that you would not need the "Beyond.." guide for the math activities if you are doing Horizons for math. So, you could easily get by just purchasing LHFHG for both of your kiddos.
Melanie is right on with the reasons why there are not 2 sets of math activities in each guide. It would be confusing to have 2 sets of math activities and also expensive to add that many more pages to each guide. We work to provide several levels of needed schedules for many subjects in each guide but have to stop somewhere!
Also, if you're using the scheduled Singapore math, you don't need to purchase the Singapore textbooks if you use our activities (which saves you another $17.40). Many moms use the "Beyond.." guide for spelling, grammar lessons, and the Emerging Reader Set schedule as well, which makes the cost of the guide very worthwhile.
If you compare the costs of our guides to our major competitors, I think you'll be able to see how much you're getting in our guides for a MUCH lower price (MFW $100, Sonlight $65 just for history, Winter's Promise $70 for history only, TOG $225 guide only)

Carrie

And just to add that you won't be tempted to throw them across the room like I have some of the others mentioned is an even bigger bargain. Hehehe!
Seriously I find I can use lots of Carrie's ideas for math activities on all levels using R&S math. I mean a dice game for addition can just as easily be done for multiplication as well. You get the idea. We do them sometimes and skip them others. It's nice to have and makes me think but not essential I think. You should be great the way you are. I would also agree it is worth it for Math and LA if that is what you need it for then I would go for it because you could pay a lot more for a guide for those two subjects separately.
THANKS

Thank you so much for all of your advice, it has been very helpful and nice to hear. I am glad to hear others doing LHFHG for first, and doing well. I was worried we would be behind. I think I am still toying with the idea of getting the beyond book, just for fun math ideas in case we need a break from the regular or a different way to teach something. Also that way if 1/2 through I want to merge into LA I can do that to. But it is nice to know it is not essential. And of course I have to agree, I love the looks of HOD so I would use it next year anyway. Carrie, you are also correct that the content of your books is so much more than the others and better laid out, Sonlight makes me dizzy at the lay out and sick at the price. Thank you for all your work and thanks for all the advice. I will be looking forward to reading more posts on here to glean more knowledge
Thanks

I see your e-mail address and am thrilled there is another Indiana HOD user. We're in Terre Haute and I keep showing the manual to people because I love it so much.
Welcome

Renee,
It is a sorting through process to find what is best for your family, isn't it!
Thank goodness the ladies on the board are so good about helping talk through options! It's like sitting down over tea and chatting.
Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,
you are so right it is a sorting through process and this board has been great, I feel quite at peace with the decisions at this point, and this is the first time in the process I have felt that way. I am so excited about it and am very thankful for this board to help me sort through. It is clear there are some very wise women here with great advice.
Thanks
Renee
