Yearly Testing

Jayden had her yearly testing yesterday. This is her second year, so we were able to see what HOD can really do :) She was a little more than halfway through Beyond last year and is not quite halfway through Bigger right now. We took a break in the fall to let her reading and amount of writing catch up with her brain. We are almost through with Singapore 2A right now, and were through 1A when she tested last year. We also repeated 1B in the fall just to solidfy the math for her. We have never practiced math facts, just the hands on activities and the Singapore books.

The only comment the testing person wrote down for me was that it seemed like Jayden would go the long way around solving word problems. This is just Jayden... she goes the long way around doing ANYTHING. She also told me that she would throw out the punctuation and capitalization portion because notoriously the 2nd graders score low... they are fine 1st and 3rd grade, but for some reason the 2nd grade test throws them off.

As far as scores go...

Letter-Word Identification (just reading a list of words) went from 2.9 to 4.7 (grade levels, 2 grade 9th month to 4th grade 7th month)
Reading Fluency (speed) went from 2.8 to 3.2
Calculation (ability to do math) went from 2.6 to 3.5
Math Fluency (speed of math) went from 1.5 to 2.0 ( we need to work on addition and subtraction facts)
Spelling went from 2.2 to 3.7 (dictation works wonders!!)
Passage Comprehension went from 2.4 to 3.5
Applied Problems (word problems) went from 2.3 to 4.4!!
Punctuation and Capitals went from 1.6 to 2.1 (I expect this to just explode next year because we'll be finished with Bigger and most of the way finished with Preparing before her testing next year...)

So now, I can absolutely see the jump from Beyond to Bigger as far as skills go. And when they are ready to move up to Bigger they just blossom!!

MomtoJGJE- your daughter did a great job! Congrats!!

Kristin- my daughter would be a big mess if she had to take that test. I agree. My poor girl shuts down if she is tested on something (other than spelling tests).

It really isn't stressful for the kids! :) We use the Woodcock-Johnson test and the people who do the testing are just simply awesome! They really try to relate to the kids before the testing starts. And they explain to the kids that the tests are for people from K all the way up to college level, so even high school students don't get all of them right, and that's ok.

Thanks to everyone for the congrats! I was really just trying to show how much the kids grow from the end of Beyond to the middle of Bigger. :)

*I* get nervous after 13 years of public school end of grade tests, but the kids don't :) Also, MOST of it is oral.... it's really geared straight for Charlotte Mason types.

This is so encouraging. I have a choice whether to test or not. This year, I am choosing to not test. I have the results from last year. I want to give HOD more time to see the growth since we've only been consistent with it a semester. The results you posted, though, show me we are on the right track. Plus, my daughter is growing in her relationship with the Lord, which is more important than any test score. Thank you for sharing!

HOORAY, way to go! :D I agree, Bigger Hearts is one of those blossoming years. I saw the same thing during Riley's testing this year. Definitely something to celebrate! :D

In Christ,
