Replacing books

Post by Sophie » Mon May 16, 2011 6:57 am

Hi,

How easy is it to take out a book and replace it for a different one (covering the same topic)? I'm not too happy with some of the choices, but is it doable, to just take it out?

Thank you :)

Most of the books are very easy to replace if desired. Pretty much anything on the right side, which is your "learning the basics" side. Because Rod and Staff English covers so many things, I would caution you to not replace that. The author includes many language arts within the curriculum. She is assuming you will use the english and with that everything would be covered. As for the left side, this gets a little more tricky...any of the storytime titles can be replaced. It would be be hard, I think, to replace the main history spines. This is your basic package. The only othe set of books would be your independent history. This is laid out pretty well to help the students grow.

You know, I just realized I dont even know which program you are thinking about!! This does cover many of the years, but if you want to jump on and let us know what year you are looking at and maybe which books. That way we could help you better and not ramble about things that might not even pertain to you! Lol!!

Hi,

Thank you for your reply! Sorry, I totally forgot, that would indeed be helpful :P
I'm thinking of Beyond for next year, but I was thinking a bit ahead e.g.: some of the books in the Bigger Hearts extension pack and in Preparing 'Aesop's Fables'. Later on in the curriculum, there would be more that I'd skip, but I'm not going to worry about that yet

Well, I haven't actually done beyond yet. I am hopefully (crossing fingers here!) buying it this weekend for my daughter who is halfway in between LHFHG and BLHFHG. So, I can't really help you much necessarily. It looks like similar "rules" apply. I wouldn't really switch out anything from the economy package, since that is the core of the program. The same with the basic package in Beyond...I really wouldn't switch out anything there. Math is easy to switch however, if you would like. You will just write your own lesson plans in the box somewhere & check it off when you're done. Anything from the Deluxe (or story-time) package would easily be substituted, I assume. As far as your reading, there are several choices there depending on how your reader is doing. You can continue with the phonics, begin doing the Emerging Readers or if your student is reading fluently you can begin the literature study. Of course, if you have your own program you can do that here too!

Bigger is also one I have not been through yet, but I do know the extension packs are meant to extend the study. I am sure you could find a similar book on the same topic as your unit you are studying. Also, as for Aesops Fables, that is considered part of the story-time (and there is an extension book too.) I am not sure what exactly you would replace it with, but it loosely ties in to the time period you are studying. I'm sure you could find something that you might like better during those weeks. ;o)

Hope that helps you for your upcoming year(s)! If you have any more specific books, let us know & I'm sure one of us can help.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Indeed, the books I don't feel comfortable bit are all in the deluxe, extension or storytime section. I just wanted to be sure I would be able to use the curriculum all the way through
