R&S, DITHOR, reading placement

Post by kristalyn » Thu May 12, 2011 11:15 am

This will be our first year homeschooling. DD is currently in 2nd grade and is reading at 4/5th grade level. I am going to combine her with her brother who is in K (and reading at a 1.8 grade level) in BEYOND. What level of R & S should I place her in? Should I put her in DITHOR and at what level? I think I am going to go with the emerging readers for DS...do I need to do any additional reading/LA instruction?

Do I need any additional vocab or spelling instruction?

TIA! I am SO overwhelmed! I am concentrating on starting the older 2 and then if my 4 year old shows interest, I may start him on something.

I would think R&S2 would be plenty for your dd and the grammar lessons in Beyond fine for your ds. Probably DITHR level 2/3 would also be the best fit for your dd. You could always choose a little bit higher reading level for the actual books if you want, but you don't want the books to be too challenging at first You might look at the level 3 books for her. For your ds, the emerging readers will be great. As far as spelling, you'll probably want to do list 1 for ds and list 2 for dd. I think with those things, you'll be all set. :D

Welcome to homeshcooling and HOD, Krista! :D

I agree with what Patty said exactly. HOD is a great way to start homeschooling! Enjoy!
