Using Right Side of Preparing 2 years in a row?

Post by mamabeavabjo » Wed May 11, 2011 8:08 pm

We will be using HOD for the first time in a couple of months. I will use LHFHG with my kindergartener and Bigger with my 2nd and 3rd graders. My 3rd grader will need the dictation/spelling from something more advanced than Bigger (I already have this guide and she would be on the last spelling and dictation passages). We currently use WWE 2 and she does very well with it. Is it worth getting the Preparing guide just for the dictation/spelling and then using the right side for two years or should I just continue on with WWE? Thanks!

That's what I'm going to do. I have just received Bigger and Preparing and will use the LA from Preparing starting with level 3 dictation this yr and using level 4 next.

There are multiple levels of Language, Math & Dictation in the Preparing Guide. I would assume though that you don't mean ALL of the right side of PHFHG. Because there is also Science, Poetry & Bible Study on the Right side, which I would wait to use until you are doing the complete PHFHG Guide.

There are schedules for Singapore 3A, 3B, 4A & 4B, Dictation Levels 2, 3 & 4, and schedules for R&S Beginning Wisely & Building with Diligence in the PHFHG Guide.

It would be worth it to me. Step by step these dictation passages move dc through dictation based on mastery of each passage, and they do wonders to help dc with their spelling. This does so much more for dc's spelling than random dictation selections from year to year can. My oldest ds struggled with spelling initially, but having moved through Levels 2, 3, 4, and 5 of dictation through the past years, he has become an excellent speller that rarely makes errors. I used Spelling Power and R & S Spelling previously, as well as ETC, and eventually dropped them altogether. Nothing has done as much for my ds's spelling as dictation done the CM way, moving through specific levels that build upon one another. I'd get on that path right away if I were you, but you will know what you think is best for your dc. :D
