Another question

If I am using Abeka for phonics instruction, and I plan on using the 1st grade Abeka phonics curriculum with readers with DD this upcoming year with LHFHG, do I still need to use the ERS? I already own the Abeka phonics stuff, but haven't looked through it. Does anyone know if it has comprehension questions like the Beyond guide has for the ERS? Would you use both if it were you?

I would not do both. I would just choose one. I would think that the Abeka would be fine to use though. You won't get the questions but you could ask your own or Abeka probably has some.

We used some of the Abeka readers before we did the emerging readers. That could have been the K readers though and not the 1st grade readers though we did quite a few and I think some of the books I used was Abeka 1st grade. I really liked the systematic progression of the emerging readers and having the questions laid out for me. I preferred the emerging readers for the steady increase in skills and the ease of use. The emerging readers start out at around a level 2 reading level so you may find that they are a natural progression beyond the Abeka level 1 readers.

I have not used the Abeka readers, but I have used the ERS twice, once with each of our older sons. I think I'd try to use the Emerging Reader's Set if you can, as I felt the ERS questions not only taught comprehension well, they also taught beginning oral narration skills (which are further taught in "Beyond Little Hearts..."), as well as asking higher level questions (which are further taught in "Drawn into the Heart of Reading"). The ERS books were also from a variety of genres, which I thought was nice exposure before doing the genre studies in DITHOR. So, for those reasons, I'd probably try to do the ERS if I were you, but I would think the Abeka readers would be good for free reading time, provided they are quite interesting and at the appropriate reading level for your child. However, those are just my thoughts - you will know what is the best decision for your goals. HTH!
