Questions about Dictation and Narraration

So...this year, I have just been having both of my boys orally narrate the history portion that we have been reading. Next year, how will this narration change? Will I have them writing it in sentence form instead of orally? I want to be sure I understand the narration concept. Also, for dictation... My son will be in Bigger next school year, with extensions. What will I have him do in the way of dictation? Will it need to be different than my younger son?

I have gotten very lax, by the way, with my 4 year old daughter in LHTH. Seems we have been missing several days, etc. Could I use this into next year as well for her for Kindergarten? She will be a very young 5 (in Sept.). I am thinking I will just stick with this until it is finished, whenever that may be!

So, as far as spelling for next year in Bigger, is the dictation where the spelling comes in? This year I have used a separate spelling curriculum but not sure I want to continue it. Just wanted to see what I should do.

In Bigger, you will continue to orally narrate. The guide will instruct you to have the dc narrate on particular days. There are instructions to narrate for history, science, and storytime each one once per week. These are done on different days so it isn't overwhelming. There are more instructions in the appendix of Bigger for you as the teacher about narration and also a page for the student to help them understand how to better narrate. For dictation, here is a recent thread that tells a lot about it: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9130 Dictation is used in place of traditional spelling lists. In Bigger there are 2 spelling lists and one level of dictation. If you have a more beginning speller, you would use list 1 and the instructions in the guide with the spelling list. If the dc is a bit more advanced, then use list two with the instructions in the guide. The dictation passages are for use with students who have mastered the basic spelling words in the provided lists. You could have them both doing the same spelling list or the same level dictation or one doing the spelling list and another doing dictation. It all depends on where each one is at in their spelling skills.

As far as using LHTH I have read of many of the ladies here using it for K. Some of them add in the right side K options from LHFHG like the workbooks and handwriting then when they get to first grade just use the 1st grade options of LHFHG. I wish I had a nice link for you on that. I know there are several threads about that Hopefully some of the other ladies can give you more info on using LHTH for Kindergarten.

Ditto to Patty's wise advice! As far as LHTH for part of K, I think that is just fine. Whenever you finish LHTH, you can just go into LHFHG next. HTH, Tina!
