??? about scheduled reading in "A Child's Story of America"

Post by Homeschooln2qts » Tue May 03, 2011 10:52 pm

We just completed Day 2 in Unit 1 of BHFHG today and LOVE it! My 10 yr. old is using the extensions and has been reading from "A Child's Story of America". I'm a little confused about the wording in the scheduled reading section of my TM for this book though and need clarification...For example, today it said to read p. 4-5 (first section). Does that mean to read p. 5 up until the point before Queen Isabella Helps? Then for tomorrow's reading (Day 3 in Unit 1) it says to read half of p. 6 and p. 7. Does that mean to read half of both pages or all of p. 6 and half of p. 7? And how do I guage at what point "half" is? I hope I don't sound dense...lol! I tried to see if dh could figure it out but he was at a loss as well. I'm pretty certain I have the latest edition --copyrite 1998 (Second printing-2001) Thanks in advance for any help! :D

In my copy of the book, there's a new subheading on page 5. So my guess is that you read page 4 and then stop at the subheading on page 5 (Queen Isabella Helps). Then for the half of page 6 and 7, I would assume that you begin reading "Land, Land!" on page 6 until "Columbus and the Egg" on page 7. Because the next reading is half of page 7 through all of 8. I'm pretty sure that she has broken it down into subheadings, so when you're not sure where to stop, just stop at the next subheading.

Ok, thanks --that makes sense :D I was just wondering why we would skip the Queen Isabella Helps part on p. 5. It seemed like an important part of the story and I didn't see it covered again in future readings. Does anyone know if there is a reason that portion is skipped? Thanks again! :D

It may because it is already covered in the History Book that is read those first few days.

HOD usually breaks up the reading of living books within sections, at natural breaking points within the books. HOD's plans are written chronologically, so when living books are used, you may come back to a section at a later time in order to keep the chronological flow going. The "Key Ideas" that are written in the daily plans sum up the reading for each day beautifully (which I personally love :D ). I realize the extensions don't have "key ideas", but I thought this information might help in general as you use the guides. HTH! :D
