Question!...yeah I'm full of 'Em...

Post by my3luvs » Sat Apr 30, 2011 6:49 am

I am new to the CM approach. I know the overall approach.......but specifics about how to teach it....no so much.

Should I be reading something specific? Is something available online that I can read? OR will the HOD TM walk me through step by step to explain to DD how things are done and what are expected of her with copy/dictation etc.

I spent hours researching the CM approach. This forum is loaded with advice! I must have read The Reasons Behind HOD's Choices a half-dozen times (located on the Main Board). I also used the search box at the top and just typed in areas where I had questions... such as dictation or notebooking. I looked up many articles online too. Simply Charlotte Mason contained many articles that were helpful. There are also many books put out that describe the CM method, as well as the writings of Charlotte Mason herself. I read blogs of others that followed the CM approach and use HOD. The TMs of HOD are really good. The beginning and the appendix of the guides are loaded with information. For instance, there is very detailed description about dictation in the appendix of the Preparing guide that totally helped me with learning how to do dictation with my daughter when we had never done it before. The CM approach works wonderfully, but it is different than traditional. I encourage you to read all you can. HOD guides the parent and student beautifully with the CM approach.

Totally agree. :) I also suggest reading the stickies at the top of the main board explaining HOD's choices and philosophies. Good stuff!

There is lots of information on how to teach narration and dictation in the manual. There are also lots of great books on CM if you want to do some reading on your own.

No, you don't need to read anything specific although I gave you two choices below. Agreeing with the other posters. HOD will hold your hand through it as well. No need to worry.

If you want to know about CM and how it all works, these are the best:

A Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola
Or A Charlotte Mason Education and More Charlotte Mason Education by Catherine Levison.

LOL..... you get used to it. And then you learn right along with your child after finding out you messed it up. I've said it plenty, "Oh wait! Mom messed it up. Let me do this again!"

You'll be fine!
