For those of you that have used Rod & Staff English

Post by my3luvs » Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:16 pm

This will be new for us. I do not believe DD has diagrammed before. If they taught it to her she does not remember. Will this be taught in 4? Or should I review 3 with her first? She is currently using GUMS for 4th grade-public school.

I am using rod and staff with my children. My 4th grader is using level 3. I just learned ladt night that apparently in public school they no longer teach diagramming  .. If I were you you could do one of two things. The first option would be to do level three with preparing( I am assuming you plan to do preparing in the fall from your signature??)-if you do this you would just need to pace over the years to finish level 8 in the 12th grade. Or if you reall feel your child has learned all the things covered in the table of contents of level 3 then you could just order level 3 to go over the diagramming? and actully do level 4 with preparing :D

Thanks!

Yes I am planning on starting in July actually :)

I am planning on doing the following:
R&S 3 with PHFHG
R&S 4 with CTC
R&S 5 with RtR
R&S 6 with RevtRev

This actually works with the HOD grammar tract finishing 6 by the end of 8th grade. PLUS it will give us a chance to master some grammar skills she is lacking.

She brought home grammar homework last night and couldn't complete it. They were working on Sensory adjectives and adverbs. She couldn't even tell me what an adverb was. UGH. This will also give me a chance to brush up on my skills ........b/c I'm way out of practice! LOL

Your plan sounds great considering what your child does/does not know. Rod and Staff is very complete and is a bit advanced, so I think what you are going to do will be a great fit and long term plan.
I've done all the guides now with at least one child and still feeling the HOD LOVE. LOL!

I think your plan sounds great! :D I'm pretty sure diagramming isn't introduced until R&S 3 and that introduction has been very gentle and builds each concept on the last one, IMO. We have really enjoyed R&S around here--it is very thorough and complete!!! :D

I know HOD does not utilize the test's or workbooks do you use them to check your DC on retention?

I have not needed to, but you absolutely could add that in if you wanted to...I have found that it is important with R&S to not make them write out EVERY single question/assignment, etc. or your child may burn out fast. I have found that if I do one section orally with my DS and then assign him odds or evens with the written assignments, he does much better and with rarely any tears. If you felt like your child needed some more practice with a certain concept, you could definitely utilize the extra practice/worksheets. HTH!!!

Your plan looks just perfect, and it sounds like she does need a little "refreshing" :D Level 3 is I think a great place for her!! :D And I have not used the extras personally, but I think when you get to the reviews in the text, this is a good time to see if she is comprhending things :D How exciting! HOpe you enjoy it as much as we have!

What great advice you've received here! :D I agree R & S English 3 is a great place for your dd to start, and the extras will not be necessary. We do suggest doing 2/3 of R & S English orally or on markerboard, and having dd write the other 1/3. This keeps dc clipping along while not sacrificing retention. We have found this to work very well with our 2 dc over the years. R & S English is my all-time favorite grammar program - and I'm an editor. :D I think you'll find it does a thorough job of teaching grammar for the purpose of excellent writing, in a Christian manner. :)
