As I sit here and fix my schedule for next year, some reading questions.

DD does love to read and reads a lot of books on her own. She's on her fourth Volume of the Mandy books and she only started the series about 2 months ago. She'll be reading this, and interspersed, she'll have about 5 or 6 simpler books like Seredipity or picture books that she'll read in between She reads while she eats breakfast or/and lunch or whenever.

I'm wondering, during breakfast or lunch if I should have her read her school books, like the Storytime selection or the Independent History selection. I always thought that it's "her" break time and she can read whatever she likes (or not at all), but it certainly would make the day go faster if during at least lunch, she read her school work books. Afterall, in "school" you sort of have to do that as well.

Do you have your children do this or is it stripping them of their break?

In CTC, storytime is designed to do together with you reading aloud. You could read to her during lunch. That might be a very good option.

Independent History is not always reading--sometimes it is listening to a CD, sometimes drawing with Draw & Write Through History, sometimes copying, often looking up Scriptures and writing down information for the prophecy fulfillment chart. I don't see that box as something you could accomplish during lunch.

She could read from the "Reading about History" box or "Science" box during lunch since those are designed to do independently, but then she would need to do the follow-up activities.

Our day really has been about 4 to 4.5 hours so lunch for us is a total break from school and there is still plenty of free time in the afternoon.

There is a post somewhere about approximately how much time to allow for each box--I've found it pretty accurate. That, combined with Julie (my3sons)'s CTC schedule and Carrie's CTC schedule, I got a good idea of how to schedule my day.

This is how our day goes:
8:00 Bible quiet time & study Awana verses
8:30 Reading about History
9:00 Storytime (20); History Project (20); Independent History Study (20)
(we usually manage a short snack break in here somewhere)
10:00 Bible Study or Geography (20); Language Arts (40)
11:00 Poetry/Painting
11:30 Math
12:00 Lunch
12:30 Science
1:00 Done with HOD (a few extras like piano practice, computer time, etc. are in the afternoon)
