Bigger ext question

Post by GinainMD » Wed Apr 20, 2011 3:45 pm

Hello to all! I'm going to be using BHFHG this year with my oldest two dds and I have been considering the ext. My question is are the extensions just extra assigned reading or are there lesson plans to go with the reading as well? Also about how much time do the ext. add to BHFHG? Thanks

The extensions for Bigger are scheduled in the Appendix of the guide. The schedule has a history reading scheduled for each day of each unit and one science reading for each unit. These are independent reading assignments for the child and then it is suggested that they do one of the following follow-up activities: oral narration(twice weekly), write a one paragraph summary (twice weekly), or draw a picture with captions about the reading (once weekly). So it is more of a scheduled reading list with the general suggested follow-ups listed above. We haven't actually done the extensions here, but I know it has been discussed before and the general consensus was that it would be an average of 20-25 minutes each day. In glancing over the schedule it looks like generally it is around 3 to 5 pages of reading a day. These are in books that are at least a level 4 or 5 reading level so the reading will probably take 10 to 15 minutes or so and then depending on the type of follow-up that could take 10 to 20 minutes depending on the type of follow-up done. I hope that helps a little. Hopefully someone who has been doing the extensions can share their experience. :D
