Buying guides ahead for me to read...good idea?

I'm going to be ordering Bigger and LHFHG sometime soon for next year and I'm a little tempted to purchase one of the older guides, maybe CTC or RTR, to read through the books myself. My only hesitation is that I'm wondering if they are likely to change much in the next few years, so that I might end up with a guide that is not compatible with whatever the current resources will be at that time. Make sense? What do you think? It would be nice to go through the guides that are more independent before my children do. (I know that's not necessary; I'd just enjoy doing it! )

Also, if I was going to buy a guide ahead for me to read through, which one would YOU recommend?

Thank you! :D

***EDITED TO ADD: I think what I'm really wondering if it's likely that there will be any major, fundamental changes in the guides. If a resource or two changes because something has gone out of print, that's not a problem...

I don't have any advice as to buying a future guide or which to buy, but I thought that I would mention that if a book were to change or go out of print before you got to it, Carrie would have the updated page schedule/new book page schedule shipped with a future order automatically and also I think that there is generally a download on the HOD website. I know there is with LHFHG anyhow, haven't checked the other guides. :D
