My dd21 has always been interested in learning about different wars, especially when she was in school. For our history reading in HOD, I read 'Nancy Hart's Dinner' in History Stories for children to dd7(LHFHG-Week 27-Day 1). During the Revolutionary War, Nancy Hart, in Georgia, had 6 Tories enter her home and demand a meal. She was very kind to them and so they let down their guard, thinking she was their friend. During the dinner, she hid their guns, and ended up taking them prisoner. I later asked dd21 if she heard the story. She hadn't and was very fascinated by it. Honestly, I had never that story, either. It is just another example of the excitement in learning through HOD. DD21 has also been nearby while we are reading Burgess books. I think she likes those stories, too. Just had to share this. Thanks HOD! The living books are great! Even for the 'old' people!

By the way, after sharing the story about Nancy Hart with dd21, she asked dd7 if she wanted to watch Liberty's Kids. They are doing that while I am writing this.

That is a great story! And I appreciate the text Carrie chose to share it. It leaves out the gory details from the children. But it piqued my interest so I looked up more about the story. The soldiers had killed her turkey and brought it in to be cooked, which she did and treated them kindly until she could hide their guns. Then when the soldiers found out and tried to attack her, Nancy told them she'd shoot if anyone came near her and actually killed the first man she shot, wounded the 2nd, and then the men stopped and offered to surrender, but she wouldn't lower her gun. She sent a child out to fetch water (and thus get her husband who was in the fields) and when he came back, he suggested she shoot the other 4. She said that was too good for them. Instead he and the neighbors hung them! Very glad that I didn't have to read/edit those details from my 6yo's ears. She can research the details when she is older, but in the meantime, she can just relish in the courage and not be distracted by the details. Just another reason I love the HOD curriculum. Gentle knowledge that gives the kids morsels to chew on, but not choke on!

I did LHFHG two years ago and we all remember that story.Thanks for updatingmy information on that episode of history-but Im very glad that I didnt have to present then fuller story to my son

DD7 asked after watching an episode of Liberty's Kids where a man died, 'Will we see him in Heaven'. It made her sad. I had to explain that he was probably a made up character, but many people did die in the war. She, too, could not handle information like that right now. I don't like to hear it myself, but, unfortunately, it is something we have to know because we continue to face it and will face it until the Lord Jesus returns. What a day that will be!

That's wonderful!!! I even love the Burgess books and I'm older than your dd. That's really what's so wonderful about living books, everyone can enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.

I've been enjoying the Burgess books myself, and I'm going on 50! I'm sure I will enjoy the books in Beyond next year, but I'm going to miss reading about the animals. They almost seem like a 'real' part of our life.

I'm so glad to hear that your older daughter listened in and enjoyed too! This is the difference in a living book versus a textbook. Living books are interesting no matter what age you are! I agree that I thoroughly enjoy them too and have learned much right along with my kiddos!
