TRL - how long?
TRL - how long?
How long does it take to complete TRL? I've been using HOD for 2 years, but have never used TRL or RME. I will be starting my 3rd son in K this fall and am wondering if it is a 1 year or 2 year phonics program? I know that largely depends on how fast we take it. However, I am wondering about how to pace it, since I will be starting it with a young 5yo. Should I pace it so that it is a 2 year program ... or just go with the pace of the child for the most part? It is a complete phonics program, right? Will I need to do anymore phonics instruction once the program is complete?

For us, TRL is taking about a year and that is going at the pace of about 2 pages a day. My DS was 5.5 yo when he started it in the fall. It is the kind of program that you can definitely pace based on your child, IMO. You could start out at 2 pages a day and see how he does and if it's too much, pare it down to one page a day. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE The Reading Lesson and wish I had known about it with my first DS! My second DS is now READING and gaining more confidence each day. We are on Lesson 17, so almost done with TRL!
I also have him do Explode the Code, although it is by no means necessary. I think TRL is a complete phonics program -- simple, but effective!! I just like that ETC reinforces phonics and handwriting for my kids.

I like ETC as well. I used that for my other 2 sons in addition to another phonics program. I am glad to hear that you liked it so well that you wised you would have used it with your other child. That's good to know.
