working from two guides at the same time

Post by Mercy » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:31 pm

First off...please forgive typos, etc. I am typing on this little phone of mine. Lol!

So, my daughter is in lhfhg. She is getting closer everyday to finishing trl. Within a month or so she will be moving into the ers. I was thinking of doing both bibles, so she would do the early reader bible while still in lhfhg, then begin the beginners when we go into beyond.

She will also be finishing her horizons workbook in June. I just happen to be going through all of my books and found 1a and 1b singapore. She is a little beyond these, but at this age making sure they really get it and lingering might not be too bad. So, I was thinking of getting the beyond to work with her through the rest of lhfhg.

The other thing is, she really is needing spelling as well. So, buying the beyond is a good idea I think.

Here is where I get to the question...
If I am doing the ers, math and spelling from beyond-how does that work when we get to beyond? Am i messing things up here?

Thanks for any thoughts or input!

I am using LHFHG this year with my 6 year old. He has already read all of the emerging readers and is now reading through some 2nd grade books that I happen to have on hand. I am doing all the 1st grade options with him along with the LHFHG guide. I have used the Beyond guide for the emerging readers, light grammar, spelling, and math.
Next year when we do Beyond, I plan to use DITHOR with level 2 books, Rod and Staff 2 English, and 2nd grade math. I have already been through Beyond once ... and am super excited to go through it again ... it's really great!

We are not finished with LHFHG yet but he finished his Phonics yesterday. I just had the thought this morning that I will just go through the Early readers bible now and then when we start Beyond we will do the Beginners bible. I have both here. We will just continue on it our explode the code stuff. This summer I plan on doing something with him probably 1st grade lifepacs and that comes with readers. That way he doesn't loose his reading skills or have a set back. I am still deciding but he is just not ready for the LA options in Beyond yet I looked over them the other day. So I figure after a summer of skills then hopefully he will be ready.

So, maybe I could use the early reader bible and make my own spelling list?? Or...it might be ok to get ahead in spelling? I am just thinking further ahead in the years...It will bug me a lil flipping to a different page ea day for math. I know once you get to 3a and b though there are no activities and we cwn just check off that we did our math that day. So, I know, in the long run, math turns out ok. Does the spelling ever correspond to the left side? If we begin spelling now, in lhfhg, will we still be able to do it next year in beyond? I won't be working out of two tm's w that, right?

Mercy, the spelling lists are in the Appendix. So no matter which list you are using, you'll be flipping to the Appendix for your words. The activities that you are using for the spelling lists will be in the boxes on the right side in your everyday work. There are 2 spelling lists so you could easily start now and then continue while you are doing Beyond. If you go through both spelling lists before you get to Bigger, then you will just do dictation in Bigger. The emerging reader list is also in the appendix, so you can follow that independently of where you are in the guide. Going ahead with the math is the only one of those things to put you at a different place in the guide. Unless you are just dying to start the math, I think I would wait to start 1A until you start Beyond in the fall. That way you'll be able to do the math activities that go with 1A and be on the same page in the guide for everything. If you do want to go ahead with math, you'll just be at a different place in the guide for your math activities than you are for the rest of the program. If that bugs you, I would wait especially since your daughter won't be finishing her current math until June. :D

Thanks Patty for your response. We school year round and just started our year in Feb. She has a math brain. She answers quicker than my 11yo when we do flash cards. She places in the second book of 1a right now. I am thinking I am going to go ahead and do 1a with her now, because I really like the activities that go along w singapore. I am switching my oldest to Teaching Textbooks this year and I am considering doing the same for my daughter in the long run. Otherwise, if we really like Singapore, the math does even out the levels once you get to preparing I see, so I think it will work out ok. Preparing has both 3 and 4 scheduled, so we should be ok. I feel good about the fact that beyond has two spelling lists, so getting started on that should be ok too. The same with reading. It is so nice how flexible HOD is in these younger years! I am going to wait until next year to add the grammar lessons, so that will work out good. But, even if I decide to add them, I can just begin r&s 2 whenever we finish! Such a wonderful design!

Feeling a flood of peace about how to work everything out. :)
I am so thankful to have found Heart Of Dakota!
