For those of you that have read some of my past posts you know my ds can struggle with narrations. In the past I would read a chapter and often he would give a very vague oral narration, sometimes he couldn't even remember the main characters names. That has been getting better this year, but still is a struggle at times. I think that he may have a memory glitch that sometimes interferes with his ability to remember things after he has read them. We also have been working on his narrations being not just a summarizing of facts, but to really put some personality in them. Well Friday I went to the homeschool convention and my dh did school with the kids. We have co-op on Mondays so today was our first day back to our storytime book "Travelling the Way". As we were getting ready to start my ds says "Wait I have to tell you what you missed." He then went into this full orall narration with the names of every character and lots of personality in his retelling. For him to remember all of that 3 days after the fact is a huge break through for him!! Most of the time he can't even tell dh at dinner what he learned during the day. I told him how proud I was of him and what a great job he did remembering it all so I would know what was going on. I am just praising God for the improvements I have seen today with him. God knew I needed the encouragement and wow between talking to Julie and Carrie this weekend and now this and his independence with his history project that I mentioned in an earlier post, He has supplied that encouragement tenfold!

That is fantastic! I wonder sometimes with my own dc if the pressure of narrating is what clams them up. I find often times when it is their idea to tell me about something, they do so much better. It sounds like your son is doing awesome and making progress by leaps and bounds. That is awesome! I am praising the Lord that He is encouraging you and answering your prayers!

I'm praising the Lord with you today on this breakthrough! As moms, we need to savor these moments and record the progress in our minds, as its easy to forget how far our kiddos have come!

First of all, that's an awesome praise! I would be so happy, too!!

I think our dd has the situation I quoted above. She is SO shy and has such a fear of talking "on command". She can talk all day to me just fine on her own, and same with her friends--but if we are in a situation like ordering in a restaurant, or having to introduce herself, etc., she just clams up. I can't get really great oral narrations from her either, because of this, and I'm not exactly sure how to make them better. But, I know I would be thrilled if she had a breakthrough like your ds did!
