Spin-off of Science Answer Key

Post by John'smom » Tue Apr 05, 2011 7:14 am

I was reading the other thread and Julie comments here there reasons behind the dc writing the things out in Bigger on their Science notebooking pages. I was totally going to use some science notebooking pages I already had so that my dc would not have to write that out each time. I thought it would just save a little time and their notebooking pages could be a little prettier. So is it my understanding that a child should definitely be writing all those little titles or headings on their science notebooking pages themselves?

Oh, and off topic a little here, but do you have your dc use their rulers in their notebooking pages? I know I'm a little OCD. It just seems like things would be tidier, but I guess it could put too much pressure on the dc too. What do you do and what's your opinion?

Thanks, ladies. :D

Maybe I'm a little OCD too, lol. I actually make and print off pages with lines at the top for them to write on.

I made my own lab sheet for Bigger. I think it really is fine either way. I think if you casually mention each step in the scientific method as you go through each experiment, your dc will learn the process well. For my severely dyslexic ds, copying the title really wouldn't have helped him learn the process, but another child may learn very well from routinely copying the titles. You know your dc best.

I considered having a pre-done lab sheet for my dc this year in Bigger, but decided to let them write it all out for all of the reasons mentioned before. If nothing else, it has helped them learn how to spell guess, procedure, and conclusion correctly. I actually think it has helped them retain the method too. For the notebook assignments, I usually use a ruler and make light guide lines for them to write their scripture, but usually nothing more. This does make for not as neat of a presentation overall, but I think that is ok at this age. If I don't make the guide lines for them now, they usually get a ruler and do it themselves. So it has taught them how to try to make a neater presentation. :D

I had Wyatt write his own all year, and down-shifted into Riley writing his just for a portion of his year. I like the way the writing of it imprints the steps of the scientific method on them, but then you are right, once they have learned the order of the steps, they do add more creativity to the page if they are not writing all the steps. So, I'd say you can do whichever fits your dc best in this situation. I do pull out the ruler for the notebooking page's titles and columns/rows - I'm a little OCD too, but I like a neat page. :D
