Journals/Loose Leaf Paper? Subjects?

Hello all. I am getting super excited to finish up our current school year as we begin HOD in July! Woohoo! My oldest son (11) will be doing Preparing with extensions, my middle son (7) will be doing Beyond, and my little girl (4) will be doing LHTH.

I know I will not need the same type of organization system for the next year as so much of it is already laid out. Very excited about taht!

My questions are these:

1) Do you tend to use composition notebooks or loose leafed paper with a binder for different subjects (ie. Language Arts, Science, etc.) Which do you prefer and why?

2) Are these the main subjects for my older 2 that I would consider needing a "binder" or notebook of some sort for.....
*History
*Vocabulary/Spelling
*Language Arts
*Bible Study (I relaly want to encourage them to begin a prayer journal)
*Poetry
*Science
*Reading (I plan to print a log off for my records of books read.)

Am I missing any?


Any other thoughts or organizing for 3 guides that you would share?

I am using Preparing with my ds this year. This is what we do. We use composition books for Grammar, Math, Dictation, and the Common Place notebook. For history and science, we use 3-ring binders. I divided the binders into sections using tab dividers. History is divided into, Notebooking Pages, Independent History, and Written Narrations. Science is divided into, Notebooking Pages, Experiments, and Discussion Questions. We use loose paper and put the finished products in clear sheet protectors. Vocab. is done using 3x5 index cards and a card box with alphabet tabs.

We've just switched to using a binder and I don't think I like it as much. With individual books, the kids could hand it to me to look at and move onto something else. Now I have this big binder in my lap and they can't use it again til I give it back. The kids seem to like just getting the binder out and not having to get a new book out for each subject though.

Thank you for the replies. I have a bunch of small 1/2 inch and 1 inch binders. Rather than purchasing new, I am going to use them for the different subjects. It saves me from buying something new since right now I can repurpose what I have.

My oldest liked the idea of the loose leaf paper versus the composition notebook. I think visually, he likes the larger size. LOL He has a bit of his momma in him.

My middle didn't care as long as he had something.

And, my youngest who doesn't need them wants what big brothers have. (She interjected this during a conversation with the boys. LOL)

One more suggestion-if you are going with binders, I would get plastic page protectors-they are available at office stores and not expensive-you can fit two sheets of paper back to back in each sleeve. This will save you from having the year's work get beat up and torn, as has been my past experience with looseleaf in binders
