Can someone tell me how this works? I am wondering if my son who will be 1st grad in the fall would do better doing beyond at half speed. Or going ahead and doing it half speed this summer then going full speed in the fall.
So how do you do it? What do you do each day that makes it slower?
Thanks
Question about going half speed
Re: Question about going half speed
Whenever reading half-speed threads, I see things going 2 ways.
One is to do the left page of the lessons one year, and then the right side the next. In doing this, use the lower/1st gr. options for math/spelling/writing and such the first go around, and then the second year use the higher options.
Second is to do each week in 2 weeks. Doing the left page one day, the right the next. Keeping math up to speed with each grade. Alt. days between English and spelling.
I'm sure someone else will be able to chime in with more info.
My K'er is in LHTH and Little Hearts right now, swapping between the two pending the subject. Next year she will use Little Hearts for 1st with the higher grade options.

Re: Question about going half speed
I don't know if this is a repeat of Tabitha's reply, so sorry if it is!
This is how we do half-speed......
As you know, one day's worth of work in the guide is a two-page spread. When going half speed, I do only one page per day, looking like this....Monday-left side page only; Tuesday-right side page only; Wednesday-leftside page only; Thursday-right side page only; Friday-left side page only.
That's our half speed way, and I really like it. It's easy, uncomplicated, and gives a variety throughout the week with alternating the pages like that.
Half speed is a great way to introduce your child to the HOD way of learning. It really helps the mom and child not feel ovewhelmed at first, especially for a family who is new to the Charlotte Mason method of schooling!!
Hope this helps!
Have a great day!

Re: Question about going half speed
Well, if you want to take two full school years to go half speed you could do the left side (history, etc.) of the guide every other day, but the right side every day and just start over when you get to the end of one grade and go to the next. Like if you use singapore math and you want to do Beyond for 1st and 2nd grade, you would do math every day. Then when you get to the end of 1B you'd be all the way through the guide on the right side, but only about halfway through the guide for the left side, so you'd start back at the beginning of the guide for the right side, but do singapore 2A/B.
OR if you just school and not worry about grade levels, etc. and are just wanting the child to mature into the guide a little more you could just do straight left page one day right page the next. This spreads ALL the subjects out longer and lets the child "catch up" to going at full speed through either that guide or the next. MOST people that go half speed do not do a full two years in a guide from what I can tell... MOST people just use half speed to work into a new guide to let the child get a better feel of how the guide works. That might take a few weeks or months.

Re: Question about going half speed
Thank you ladies.
I am still thinking on this but I may go ahead and start this summer going half speed then hopefully work up to full speed by fall or shortly there after.
Still pondering and trying to figure it all out.
