Money Issues!

DD is having trouble 'getting' counting money. She is just finishing up EB2B and I'm just wondering how much I should work on this before we move to PM1A. For example, she wants to just count everything by ones...pennies, nickels, etc. She will count nickels by 5's if I prompt her, but I don't think she understands fully that 5 pennies and a nickel mean the same thing. Should I just work through the activities and pages or should I spend extra days on this? I know she will be getting more instruction in this, so does it hurt to move on? I knew that money and telling time would be an issue for her. I was told by a psychologist that kids with CP often have struggles learning math skills. I can tell that certain math concepts are going to come slowly.

I wouldn't worry about it at the K level. In my view K math is a year of introduction KWIM. You will be covering money again and again. If she still is having trouble in PM 1, then take time to review it until it sinks in.

twoxcell, Thanks. I know this stuff will be covered again. I just get concerned that my almost 8 yo in 1st grade seems to be way behind the norm, but I'm the one always stating that if there are some learning disabilities, we need to take it at a slower pace and not expect our dc to keep up with those on what is considered grade level. I have seen progress in many areas with dd, so I need to just be patient and let it come when it comes.

I guess I didn't notice your dd's age. At 8 my answer would be a bit different. I would set up a play time with a store and have her practice money by paying for items. Also have her practice counting with real or play money.

I know several children personally that didn't READ until 10 or 11, one of them was 12. Guess what? They are just fine now and are at "grade level".
You would never know that they couldn't read until that age.
I know one girl that struggled and struggled and I tried to convince her mother that she just wasn't ready, but she was nervous so she put her in school. She got special attention and a "reading specialist" for the year and she didn't improve for a long time. Finally, the next year, after 1/2 of a school year she "got it". Guess what the specialist told her mother? "It seems she was just not ready before and she just needed to grow a little bit." Surprise!

And about the counting money, it will come. In the grand scheme of things, 8 is still pretty young.

DD is maturing more slowly in certain areas. I am encouraged that she is progressing in her reading, though not in leaps and bounds. I think Math is going to be the biggest challenge. I do want to do more real life stuff with her using money.

I never really understood it until I began using it. I also couldn't grasp the concept of telling time until I was given a watch for Christmas one year. Having real-life applications really helps, and makes it more real.
