Timeline

Post by momof4 » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:08 am

Hi Ladies,
Many of you are so great at organizing things so I have a question for you! We bought a blank timeline book with the intention of using it now and adding to it as the kids go through elementary (and maybe beyond). I'd like the timeline to start at creation and then go to present. It's pretty thick book and I can write in my own dates so I think I have plenty of room to do this. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?

We are starting Bigger in a week or so and mostly I'm wondering how many pages to leave prior to this so I have room to add the timelines in the next guides as we "go back in time". Beyond went by 100 years, do the older guides go by centuries or smaller increments? I'm kinda clueless when it comes to organizing stuff like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated. I just thought this would be a cool keepsake for our kids.

Thanks!
Laurie

No suggestions for the timeline book, but were you not planning to use the timeline activities in HOD? Bigger and Preparing have timleine directions in the daily plans, and the upper guides include timelines in the wonderful student notebooks. Your timeline book sounds great, but we are enjoying filling out timelines as scheduled in the plans, and they do make great keepsakes :) For Bigger we used a manila file folder for American History, and for Preparing we used blank index cards cut in half and taped together with clear packing tape in an accordion-fold for a sweep of World History from Creation to the present, and the children made their own illustrations and filled in the dates and people or events.

Opps. I guess I wasn't clear.

Yes, Yes, Yes, I want to use the activities in Bigger and Preparing, but instead of on the folder for Bigger I wanted to put it in this book and then when we get to Preparing use the same book just earlier in the book and continue with all the guides. The book is spiral bound and has the timeline with places to add dates and plenty of room for illustrations, people, events etc. I wish it was accordion style. We looked at one at the conference last year, but it was a lot more expensive than this one.

The decision I need to make is how much room do I need leave prior to the dates in Bigger. And how do I increment the dates on the timeline itself. Does your timeline in Preparing go by centuries, every 50, 20 10 years?

Does that make more sense?

Oh! Ok that does make more sense :) I'm sure it's me being foggy-headed, not you being unclear :D Well, Bigger tells you to draw a chart in increments of 50 years from 1450 to 1950. In Preparing, the timeline entries are made one or two at a time, and on individual cards, not on a chart with increments of time, so I couldn't really say how much space to leave in your timeline book. You can see what I mean in day 4 of the Preparing sample pages here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/PHFHG-sample-week.pdf Sorry I couldn't be more help!
Edited to add: Preparing spans from Creation at 4000 BC to 1975.
