Hi,
I need some help with the instructions in LHFHG, Unit 26, Day 5, on how to make a 5-point star. I am missing something here. It says, "Make a 'V'. Without picking up your pencil, go diagonally downhill. Now go straight across. Last, go up to where you first started." Was the paper supposed to be folded some way before doing this? It just says, "Give each student a piece of white paper." I'm assuming the diagonal downhill is down to the right? How far down? Past the V? And the straight across is to the left? I'm not seeing 5 points with this so I am obviously missing something. Maybe the paper needs to be folded?
Thanks,
Kathy

Those instructions are correct... they are upside down from how I typically do a star though
Do each step
1.) make a 'V'
2.) go diagonally down (to the left until your pencil is under the left side where you started)
3.) go straight across (the 'V' until you get under the right side top of the 'V')
4.)go up (to the point of the 'V') where you first started)
The star will be upside down

Try when you go diagonally downhill, go to the left, a little past the 1st line of the V, so you end up about halfway down your original V. Then straight across to the right past the V, then back to where you started the V. Clear as mud?

Re: Need Help- LHFHG, Unit 26, Day 5, How to Make a 5-Point Star
Thanks for the quick reply, Kristen. I didn't realize we were making this star by crossing lines. It makes sense now. I had in my head drawing an outline of the star with no crossing lines. For anyone else confused by this, after drawing the "V", the diagonal line is going to go down to the left side of the upward "V" stroke. Like Kristen said, take it down about halfway down the "V" and a little out to the left of the starting point of the "V" (if you were to draw a line straight down from the start of the "V", you should stop a little to the left of that), then draw the straight line across to the right, going a little past the right point of the "V" (if you were to draw a straight line down from the stopping point of the "V", you should be a little to the right of that), then draw a diagonal line up and to the left to return to the starting point of the "V". I think the important thing to know is that you are drawing a star like you probably did as a child, crossing lines all in one stroke, instead of just drawing 5 continuous V's to make a non-crossing outline. Thanks again, Kristen!
