This might sway those who are on the fence about HOD...

I just wanted to post today to tell about something I discovered while looking into next year's plans. I hope it might be of some help to anyone who's on the fence with trying to decide about jumping in and joining us here with HOD. Here's what I discovered...

While waiting for my dgs at soccer practice a couple of days ago, I made a list of things I wanted to cover in next year's plans. I had a copy of Ambleside's list of book suggestions, and some thoughts of my own of things I wanted to include. I numbered down a page as I added things to my list, not necessarily in any order of importance, but of course I realize some are more essential than others. I already have a copy of Bigger that I bought used, and had thumbed through it just to get the gist of how things were set up. In the back of my mind there was that little bit of doubt that I could cover all I wanted to with Bigger, so I wanted to try a list to see how it would compare with what was included with Bigger.

Here's how my list went:

1) Scripture memory-- *covered in Bigger (Proverbs and others too)
2) Bible lessons---*covered in Bigger
3) History using living books--*covered in Bigger
4) Science using living books including inventors--*covered in Bigger
5) Math--own program, *exercises covered in Bigger
6) Art activities---*covered in Bigger (may add in private lessons)
7) Music using folk songs and hymns--*hymns covered in Bigger
8) Grammar---*schedule for R & S 2 covered in Bigger
9) Nature study---*Carrie suggests using Clare Walker Leslie book for this and Jim Arnosky--this will be my add in under her suggested titles
10) Poetry Memorization---*poetry study covered in Bigger
11) Literature (read alouds)--*lists from Bigger covered and also DITHOR
I will add in Parables from Nature as we have time, possibly one per every 4 weeks or so.
12) Word roots/Foreign lang.---*we have Elem. Spanish free through United Streaming, and I will possibly add in word roots cards as time allows
13) Phonics/Spelling/Dictation---*Spelling and Dictation covered in Bigger
14) Character lessons---*covered in Bigger

So you see, I only have a couple of things I'd actually be adding in to what is already covered in Bigger. I discovered this after I actually sat down with the Bigger guide last night and read through about half of it. I didn't even realize prior to reading in the book that character lessons were already included. I had looked into buying some type of lessons separately---thank goodness I took the time to just acquaint myself further with the lessons guide! The only other thing I'd really be adding in is Spanish, and as I said, that is a free resource for us, and possibly the word roots.

So I've written this really long post to say that you might be surprised what you find is covered in Carrie's guides. I certainly was, and I'm thrilled to know that I don't have to go to the trouble of writing out any kind of plans on my own. Praise the Lord!! Carrie has done all of that work for me, and now I can be secure in the knowledge that she's already thought through all those questions I had about making sure everything is covered. This program is so deep. I can't wait to start up with Bigger in the fall. We're going to double up on our Beyond lessons as we can in order to be done in time for fall!

That's almost identical to my experience!

THe only difference is I specifically needed a format that was NOT all worksheet, worksheet, worksheet...

And I needed it laid out day by day, subject by subject...

Oh yes, not many worksheets for us either. We do so much of our work with a really large dry-erase board, then copy into a notebook.

I also really like the day-by-day set up of the guides. I really love what Carrie has included into her subject listings of each day. It's not just "read this page and that page" or "color that page" like I've seen in some other guides. I'm amazed at the work that's gone into writing the Bigger and Beyond guides, and I have to say it feels like you're being taken by the hand and helped along the way. I also like that we have a real sense of accomplishment with finishing our "boxes" for the day. My little guy needs some kind of structure to help him with his distraction tendencies, and I've really seen a difference in him since we started using Beyond.

I loved reading your post Vickie! This should be placed under the Bigger section on the message board, so more moms would find it easily when they are checking out the program. This is the time of year when everyone starts thinking about next year.

Well I guess that is God showing you how well Bigger will work for you. That is awesome.

Isn't it amazing how you just have to shut out all the voices and what about this to look at what really matters....then all of a sudden you know where you are headed. It is really easy to get distracted but in the end what matters is the values you have for education are getting covered in a way that really works. 8)

I so agree with the list. That's what sold me as well. I don't even look at other full curricula anymore. That is set for us. :D

I so agree with you, Vicki! I remember reading a lot of Charlotte Mason's philosophy and thinking that it sounded great, but then I couldn't find anything that put it all together very well. While I enjoy planning, I enjoy teaching more, and at this stage of our lives, I don't have time to do both well. I can see the fruits of all of those CMish practices now, as we learn them in HOD.

I also love books, but am overwhelmed about which ones are the ones that seem to teach each time period or skill or genre or whatever, the best. As much as I'd love to spend hours selecting just the perfect book for the perfect thing, I don't have the time. I feel like Carrie has done a great job of doing that for me as well. She's honestly like a "walking library"! And it's the same thing with hands-on activities for me... anyway, the reason school is getting done the way I want it to be done is due to HOD. Otherwise, I'd be out there looking... looking... looking..., but never teaching... teaching... teaching, KWIM?!? And let's face it, at the end of the day, the teaching needs to take place!!! 8) :D

In Christ,
Julie

Vicki,

I really enjoyed reading your post, very educational for me. I am so new to homeschooling in general, sometimes it is unclear as to what I want/need, especially long term. Your post listed some really wonderful thoughts about what is important in administering a home education to our children. I really appreciate your perspective.

Right now I know for sure, without a doubt, that I am extremely happy with the focus of LHTH and I am very much looking forward to moving on to LHFHG next. The bible and character focus is what has "set it in stone" for me. Although I won't begin LHFHG with my daughter until she is 5, I have purchased the LHFHG guide ahead of time to get a feel for it. And oh boy, I am more than excited and pleased with the looks of it.
As a newbie, reading the LHFHG guide I am continually amazed at the quality and forethought put into the program. EVERYTHING is written with a purpose. EVERYTHING seems connected and flows so perfectly. I think most importantly, I certainly feel a sense that I am glorifying God by sharing HOD with my children. Yes, academics are important and it is certainly a strong point of HOD, but I feel that God is "front and center". Carrie has truly been given a gift, and what a pleasure and honor it is to be able to share this gift with my children. I could not be happier.

Great, great post! I agree wholeheartedly with the list. That was my experience as well. Once I sat down and thought about all that was really important to me in educating my kids, I saw that HOD had it all. It was like Carrie read my mind and then did all the work!! Now that I have finally seen a Bigger manual in person, I cannot say how amazed I am! I cannot imagine the work that went into that thing! But I am thanking God for it and for how perfectly is suits our family's goals. :D

Vicki,

Thanks so much for sharing this! I am a born list-maker, so your list was right up my alley!

It is wonderful when the Lord shows us how to cover what we desire for our family, isn't it! :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I just wanted to add that today at the library I found another Clare Walker Leslie book called Nature All Year Long that looks great for an add-in with our Beyond program. I love the way this book has a gentle look at nature for each month over the course of a year. It will fit perfectly with what we're doing with Beyond.

I also wanted to add that in looking over my list, I was so surprised to find that it was all laid out for me with Bigger. I feel that God keeps trying to show me the way, and I just need to lean on Him and listen. When I heard my dgs singing our scripture verse for this week tonight before bedtime---just out of the blue and unprompted by me---it really made my heart smile. :D

Vicki,

Oh, that just does my heart good to hear your little one was singing his verses umprompted. I know the Lord is glorified by that too! :D

Thanks for sharing about the Clare Walker Leslie book, I'll have to check that one out!

Blessings,
Carrie
