Emerging readers and blhfhg

Post by Mercy » Sat Mar 19, 2011 11:45 pm

Do these combine best together? It looks like they are scheduled by unit, but I know that is optional. I am just wondering if it works best to do them as scheduled or if it matters at all :?:
Thanks,
Mercy

It is best to do the readings as scheduled, but not necessarily by unit if that makes sense. For example, DD2 is still in LHFHG, but she started the ERs with the Early Readers Bible... she will be about halfway through them when she starts Beyond... but we are still following the schedule in the back of the Beyond manual.

I agree with the other poster. I would do the readings as scheduled, but it doesn't follow anything in the units. We are in Beyond, but off in the readings because we were not done with phonics when we started. It is working out fine.

We started the emerging readers while finishing LHFHG and then finished the emerging readers about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way through Beyond. They can be used whenever your dc are ready for them independent of the guide that you are using. You do want to use the emerging readers in their unit order to get the full benefit of them. :D

Thank you so much for the replies! It looks like we will be beginning w the early reader here soon. We are currently in lhfhg and enjoying it so much! It is nice to know that it is ok to go at their pace for reading. :D

Thanks again for your help,
Mercy

Mercy,

I also just wanted to clarify that there is a daily schedule for the readings for the Emerging Reader's Set and questions that follow the readings each day in the Appendix as well. :D As the wise ladies have already pointed out, the schedule is in the Appendix so that you don't have to worry about matching the units with the unit your are on in the rest of Beyond (or in Bigger too). Simply begin the Emerging Reader's Schedule once your child finishes phonics, and do what is scheduled each day until you are done. The schedule takes a full school-year and is also found in the Bigger Hearts Appendix too. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

Carrie,

Thank you for letting me know. Just wanted to say that one of the things that I really love about HOD is you don't leave your children to themselves to read. Everywhere I turn there is some sort of follow-up with what they have read. It makes it much more meaningful. (and enjoyable too because we get to share and talk about each book. :D )

Thanks again for everything,
Mercy

Very aptly put - I couldn't agree more! :D This is what breathes skills into reading time, yet in a way that the enjoyment of the book is held intact. Excellent point!
