Science in RtR

We have decided to use RtR next year (skipping CtC since we have covered Ancients recently and my boys place best into RtR). I will have ds11 (5th) and ds12 (7th) using this. Will I need to "beef up" the science at all for ds12? I don't think he is ready for the upper level Apologia series. Too much reading for him. My other question is about the 2 options. I already have an Earth Science curriculum (CKE Earth and Space) that I have been waiting to use (before finding HOD). It is VERY similar to God's Design series...covering much of what is covered in the Weather and Water book and some. How difficult would it be to substitute this particular book for the God's Design? I would be doing the Apologia Astronomy as written. My main reason for doing this is to save money. Finances are very tight and dh has asked that I use what I have, if possible. Thanks!

Hi Sue,
As the target age range for RtR without extensions is 10-12, both your children should be fine in history and science without any beefing up, especially if adding more reading would be too much for the older one. As for science, you can choose the option 1 package rather than the option 2, as it costs less. You are free to substitute another science entirely if you prefer or need to, but the option 1 would be great as written in the RtR guide if it's at all possible for you.

If the upper level Apologia books would be too much reading, I think that is a good sign to do the HOD as is!
