Preparing for High School

Post by mom2fiveboysnc » Thu Mar 17, 2011 7:16 pm

I am trying to use all the upcoming guides for my 7th grader and just beefing them up per Carrie's recommendations and others on the board. I am planning on using PHFHG for my 3rd grader beginning in Janauary. I was hoping I could also use it for Ethan with the extensions and other resources to make it worthy of 8th grade. Of course, we would be using our own math, LA, and maybe our own science as we are finishing up year 1 of Rainbow Science this year. Has anyone beefed up Preparing for middle school? I can't find it using search but I have plenty of ideas for the other guides when we get to them. BTW, this particular son struggles with reading comprehension and language arts but is grade level or higher with math and science. I also thought perhaps the extensions would be enough for him since reading isn't his strong suit? Any suggestions you can give me would be helpful. I know Carrie and Julie are in Greenville this weekend (wish I was too!) so I'm hoping for some help from HOD mommas. TIA, Cheryl

I don't see why you couldn't. The literature and history content in HOD is sooo rich, that I know my first two children would have enjoyed these earlier manuals when they were in high school. I had to customize and "beef" up an option for Bigger Hearts for a group whose children were entering 7th grade. That was an interesting experience when I realized there were not many programs out there (rev to revolution not available at the time) that covered American history for this age with exception of Sonlight and even Notgrass' program not out yet. I have yet to find a program that is comparable to HOD that teaches skills to jr and sr high even from the Bigger Hearts level, that I think bumping up Preparing is certainly doable.

I am going to resurrect this very old and "dead" thread. I am looking at putting a 6th and 8th grader into Preparing with my 4th grader. The 6th grader will be ok with extensions, working at his level in math and la and will also be using a separate science with our co-op. The 8th grader (whose challenges I have lamented on this board at great length  ) has used Preparing in the past as a 9yo, but certainly not to the fullest. It is likely he will not remember much. I had planned to put him in RtR but it is looking as if our budget will not allow that (purchasing the World Geo Guide for my 9th grader is priority). So, I was hoping to resurrect this thread to get some more ideas about beefing up Preparing for an 8th grader. It is more for my own sanity and for the simplicity of using 1 Guide given our life issues at the moment. I could also try and find more $$ in the budget and use RtR for my 11yo and 13yo, but that isn't likely right now. Anyhoo, any suggestions would be appreciated. I am thinking of just using the Preparing ToC and finding my own resources for each topic for the 8th grader. But that just sounds so NOT simple, lol! Ugh.
