Carrie/Julie--Rev.to Rev. question before ordering!!

Hi Carrie and Julie,

I'm getting ready to order RTR for next year, and my hubby said that we should also get Rev.to Rev. with the free shipping offer (to use the following year).

Here's my question:
I LOVE how the Storytime box has suggested questions/discussion for the regular history package book--BUT, do the extension books ALSO have these questions or discussion suggestions somewhere, or is there just a suggested page reading schedule in the Appendix (like in CTC)? I'm tempted to have the regular history package instead of the extension package, just for this box! But, being that we are using it "beefed up" for high school, I feel like we should probably go with the extension package instead. Please help, because I want to order as soon as I can!! (SO excited to get and see the new guides!!) Thanks!!!!! :D

I would go with the extensions considering age. If you read through the box for storytime you will get the idea of what to ask when they are reading other books as well. The extension pack in the past has asked them to do things such as oral narration one day, a written summary one day, a picture with a sentence label, etc. I don't know if they will be harder suggestions since the age level has increased or not.

Every guide that has extensions has these directions of doing a written summary, oral narration, and a picture with caption/label-it is on the first page of the extensions daily reading schedule. I missed it myself the first time around with Bigger and Preparing, but I looked again and lo and behold, there it is...In CTC it is even more detailed ( as I noticed looking at the copy I recently received), so I am sure RTR and Rev to Rev have these directions as well.

Heather I am not sure if there are further questions for discussion in the extension package. That has not been the pattern. It is all handled by narration, written and or oral. But I am using it just as you are beefed up for high school and I think definitely you want the whole package, the history read alouds and the extension. I have read the extensions aloud in HOD for a child that had reading difficulties or was too young for all the reading but I think definitely you want the older child to read the extension, especially if you need it to count for a higher grade level. Plus the books are amazing. :D I know Carrie or Julie will get to you soon. I think they are at their peak business so I just wanted to share what we did. :D

Thanks Everyone!!
That's what I figured, that Carrie and Julie were probably very busy, especially with the convention schedule starting, etc.

So, water2wine, you do both sets of books? I was under the impression that we did just the extension OR the history read-alouds. I hope I did it right this year, by just using the extension books.

Yes that is the way I do it. :D It is set up to have different options if you need to economize but ideally for an older child you would do both. The read alouds are for all kids and then the extensions are for older kids. In the programs where you are picking by genre and it is not necessarily related to history I did the read alouds together with all my kids as a group just to make it easier. But when it is directly related to the time period I do both. So for Rev to Rev we will be doing both. Either way my kids that are older get the read alouds and the extension. We've done it this way since extensions were introduced in Bigger. I have always had kids that were a little older in the guides. I prefer using the beef up with the extensions to having them not quite at the skill level. I just feel they get so much out of the program this way.

I hope that makes sense. :D You know your child best and you have to factor that into it. It is made so that the read alouds add to the program and enrich it by matching the time period and or the genre and literature understanding. Then the extension is to bring older students to their academic level. So for my older kids I do both. My two youngest at this point in Bigger get the read aloud but not the extension. I have them and could opt to read it aloud but for them I chose not to since I want to focus more on basic skills with them. I will probably have them read the books when they are older. Hope that makes sense and helps a bit. :D

We have Rev to Rev. It all looks wonderful. Go with how you think it will fit your family best. :D

Thanks water2wine!! I just ordered a little while ago, and I went with the extension package. We're also beefing up the guides with some grade-level literature and history selections, too, so we're all set for high school!! I'm SO excited and happy that the Lord led us to HOD for our high school experience. It's everything I imagined and more!!!! :D

Heather,

It sounds like you have a good plan in place! Julie and I are still in Greenville, SC after convention and are just getting ready to fly home, so we missed all of you on the board for a few days! :D I'm so glad that the ladies were able to help you with what you need!

I am always amazed that this board is so filled with such gracious ladies, full of encouragement and wisdom! :D I love the Christ-like spirit of each of you as you help one another! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
