Pondering for the Future

I was just thinking at the levels we are going, my oldest son will be 15 when he does Rev to Rev. Will this be okay and will he learn enough that he needs for that age? I noticed that some children doing Rev to Rev are 11. 11 and 15 is a pretty big jump, isn't it? Starting in Bigger next year, will my oldest (10 yr. old) definitely need to use the extensions in order to be on track with this guide? Honestly, doing Beyond with the DITHOR as well as LA 3 and Math (level 3) has been about all I think he could have handled this year. He could not have handled any extensions, although he now loves to read, thanks to HOD and DITHOR!
Also, will he need to use the extensions in every guide following this one? My younger son (7) is right on track basically with the guides, and my daughter who is in LHTH ( 4yo) is right on track too, but my oldest will be high school level using them at the end. Anyone else going to be like this too? Or does anyone have high schoolers using the guides now?
I know I am thinking WAY ahead, but was just pondering that tonight. Also, are there plans to continue making guides each year for all the way through high school? I HOPE SO!!!!

First of all, how exciting to hear how much your ds has grown in his reading! I celebrate that success with you!

It is so fun to be able to watch our kiddos grow...especially in their weak areas!
About using extensions: I think that the most important thing is that your ds has the skills for the guide. Because he is in the extensions range, then yes, you could (and I won't say "should") do the extensions. Personally, I would make that decision based on his ability, and NOT on his age. From the way he is progressing, it sounds like he may be ready for them next year (and yes, he would probably use them every subsequent year)!

Yet, before making any decisions, I would ask myself: Is he able to handle all of the daily work or is he struggling with some area? Is he mature enough academically, especially in his writing and reading, to complete the extensions independently? Eventually, imho, yes, you will want him to use the extensions to be on track, academically, but I would really want to make sure he is successful in the guide before worrying about bumping up the expectations with the extensions. Of course, that is just my opinion.
About using Rev to Rev with a 15yo: I think Carrie has done an excellent job of explaining different things we can do to beef up a program for high school There is a discussin at the top of the board (I have not figured out how to link to it) that contains other links to additional posts about this. I do think you will have to add some things to it, but Carrie explains some ways to make this program high school credit worthy - and thankfully, there will be many who go before us to share their wisdom.

Hi Tina,
YES! We are on track to be in Rev.to Rev. when our dd is 15yo, too. If you note on the scope and sequence page, it says that the extensions for this guide are for ages 14-15, so we should be fine! Also, like mentioned, Carrie has given additional ideas to "beef up" the guides to make them even MORE high school worthy. Just looking at the preview sample pages, though, it seems like the guide is pretty meaty on its own--and then, with the extensions, will be even more so!
Just wanted you to know you shouldn't be the only one on this track! (And Carrie announced today that there are future high school guides coming, but I'm not sure they will be ready by the time our children get to those grades.)

I have been wondering if I have messed that up too. My children and I are working through Bigger. We had a bumpy road this fall with school and are only on week 6. I hope to get us done by August, so we can start Preparing by Sept. My son is 12 and my daughter is 8. My son is dyslexia, so the writing and work have been a good fit for him. The readings could be a bit more for him, but he is doing well and excited about school. He is doing the extensions. But, if I keep moving him through the guides, he will always been doing the extensions and won't hit this latest guide for 4 more years.
Even though all of us are loving Bigger and school is going well, I am starting to second guess myself too.
