dd11 struggling with Story of the Ancient World--need advice

I've been reluctant to post this because I don't know if anyone can really help me with this problem, but here goes....
My daughter is in CtC and really doing great with it. She is excelling with every box, but we are having a really hard time with Story of the Ancient World (the history spine). As I have mentioned before, reading comprehension and narration are not her strongest points academically. Story of the Ancient World is a challenging read for her, especially when read in large chunks. I do believe that the readings should challenge and "stretch" the child in order for them to grow in skills, I'm justconcerned that it is just a little too much stretching for her. Also, I do want her to enjoy history and truly draw knowledge from her reading. I'm concerned that the difficulty of this book for her is robbing her of those things. I'm not sure what to do....here are some of my ideas....
--Read it aloud to her, stopping often to discuss what we just read. Really holding her hand as long as needed until she is more "ready" for this book.
--Breaking up the reading assignments into smaller bits, thus slowing down the pace of the history elements. I would keep Language Arts, Math, Poetry, Science, Storytime, Teacher Bible Study, Geography going at the normal pace. So I guess that would mean Reading about History, History Project, Independent History Study, and Bible Quiet time Box would be the boxes that would slow down to her pace.
I just really really want her to "get" what she is reading about!
I hope this doesn't make my daughter look bad! She is such a bright, sweet, independent girl and has always been so mature for her age. She excels at so many things, it's just the history book that seems to be a struggle at this point!
Thanks for reading this, I know it's long...
UPDATE--shortly after I posted this I had a conversation with my daughter regarding this matter. When I asked her about Story of the Ancient World she said, "Sometimes I get it and other times I feel a little lost." I just thought I would mention this because it might give you more insight to this situation! Maybe you have had a child do this, too!! Thanks!
