5 paragraph essay

Post by deltagal » Fri Feb 25, 2011 6:14 am

I was asked yesterday when HOD covers the 5 paragraph essay. Does anyone know when that's slated?

Florence,

The 5 paragraph essay, complete with introductory and concluding paragraphs, is covered within Resurrection to Reformation through Medieval History-Based Writing Lessons quite extensively. It is done very well in bite-sized pieces. :) I have been really pleased with both of my sons' essay writing experience thus far. The extensive oral and written narration practice done in HOD prior to formal essay writing was excellent practice in writing. Neither of my boys balk at length or at writing. :D They struggle more with keeping the length to only five paragraphs!

I honestly believe that it's important to have a balanced writing experience, with essay writing practice just being one form of writing needed in a student's toolkit. Essay writing is important, but has been elevated to an overly important position these days due to it being a primary form of assessment for large volumes of students in high school classes, college classes, and testing situations. While it is definitely important to hit this area of writing repeatedly, it is also important to provide practice in all of the other forms of writing too. So, at HOD, we will strive toward balance in the area of writing, believing that having many tools at a writer's disposal makes a better writer overall. :D

Blessings,
Carrie

I couldn't agree more. Thank you for your quick response! We're already looking forward to RTR. :D
